SINKHOLES IN NORTHERN CEBU NOW AT 70 😱
At least 70 sinkholes have been confirmed across northern Cebu following the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck the province on September 30, according to the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) 7.
The highest number was recorded in San Remigio (40), followed by Bogo City (16), Daanbantayan (8), Medellin (2), Tuburan (2), Sogod (1), and Tabuelan (1).
An ongoing assessment is being conducted by teams from MGB Central Office, Region 13, and Region 6, using ground-penetrating radar as part of the agency’s geohazard mapping program.
The bureau explained that sinkholes in limestone areas are naturally prone to formation because the rock is soluble.
When rainwater mixes with carbon dioxide in the air, it forms carbonic acid, which gradually dissolves limestone underground, creating cavities or caves.
