An afternoon with .

Base Bahay welcomed us for a learning session. The organization has been using bamboo for affordable housing in communities across the country. They also play a key role in research and innovation, helping strengthen the use of bamboo as a reliable construction material.

We brought together varied groups doing meaningful work in their own fields; spanning design, community development, systems thinking, creative promotion, and bamboo treatment. Each coming from a different discipline, yet gathering on common ground: to keep learning and to help create a shared platform where knowledge can continuously move across networks.

Behind every project are the things you rarely see, the sketches, notes, revisions, and long conversations that shape the work.

Year 2025 reminded us that designing isn’t always about having the right answers, but about asking better questions. We listen, debate, revise, and rethink until every decision feels intentional.

We’re thankful to our clients for trusting the process, and to the people behind Mondae Studio for showing up every day with honesty, patience, and care. The year came with its challenges, but it also pushed us to learn, improve, and grow stronger as a team.

To more questions, better conversations, and spaces that truly matter.

Padayon.

Honored to join the Green Innovation Program Study Mission in London, made possible by the British Council Philippines, Department of Trade and Industry and the Design Center of the Philippines. The journey opened at the World Design Congress, where we heard powerful reminders of design’s responsibility to people and planet. In memory of Jane Goodall (1934–2025), her words to “let nature be our co-designer” resonate now more than ever.

We then visited hubs shaping the future of circular design, from Hackney Wick & Fish Island’s creative placemaking, to Notpla’s seaweed-based packaging, Batch Works’ circular manufacturing, and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s push for systemic change. Each visit showed that innovation isn’t just about technology or materials, it’s about people and communities working together.

This mission also looks ahead to the Green Innovators Programme (2026–2027), to equip creative leaders with the skills and models needed to grow a sustainability-driven creative economy.

We really enjoyed having Tom and Mik with us at the studio this past month!

Tom, from , kicked off with a bamboo immersion, learning hands-on construction and experiencing the spirit of bayanihan through the .

Mik, from .csb, brought his sharp eye for post-processing and visualization, helping bring our ideas to life across multiple projects.

Together, they worked on some exciting developments, including our waterfront project in Laguna. Thanks for the energy, insights, and good vibes, Tom & Mik! Wishing you both the best and you’ve always got a home here at Mondae. 😎

Designing spaces where everyone belongs.

At Mondae Studio, we believe that thriving places are built on love, respect, and pride.

This Pride Month, we celebrate diversity in all its forms, because true design is inclusive by nature.

“A craggy gray insert amidst the tea-pink painted façade of a low-rise condominium building”

In this series, we explore the key spaces that define Black Bean.

3 The Façade – A Subtle Invitation

The café’s facade neither demands attention nor fades into the background; instead, it engages the street with quiet confidence. A subtle threshold between city and café, it offers a glimpse of the experience within- welcoming, intentional, and deeply connected to its place.

“There is a concerted effort to use what is extant, to reuse the old, and to refrain from introducing new elements within the café.”

In this series, we explore the key spaces that define Black Bean.

2 Dining & Kitchen

The dining area is designed as an extension of the city - structured yet inviting. Natural textures and controlled lighting set the tone, with flexible seating for both lively conversations and quiet moments.

Behind the scenes, the kitchen is built for efficiency. Every detail supports ease of movement, from prep to service, ensuring a smooth flow for the kitchen crew.

“For their Makati return, specialty café The Black Bean carves out an urban oasis with Mondae Studio, bringing a jolt of energy to sleepy Salcedo Street“

The Black Bean Makati is a thoughtfully designed space where every area serves a purpose. From an engaging bar to the casual dining area and efficient kitchen, each space works together seamlessly. All these, framed by a facade that subtly engages the streetscape.

In this series, we explore the key spaces that define The Black Bean.

1 The Service Bar -A Stage for Coffee and Conversation

At the heart of cafe is the bar, a space that welcomes the guests. Its open layout turns coffee-making into a shared experience, showcasing the cafe’s passion for coffee, food and good vibes.

Above the bar, the café’s defining feature—a moss wall—draws the eye and anchors the space. As the café’s central design element, it introduces texture and depth, softening the structured interior while reinforcing the cafe’s connection to nature within an urban setting.

“When conceptualizing the café, the client and designer agreed on an overarching design narrative that depicts The Black Bean as “an oasis in the city, a respite from all the glass and steel, a place to slow down and recharge from all the hustle and bustle.”

Thank you for this feature Kanto!
