We remember Josephine Bracken on her 150th birth anniversary today.
Born in Hong Kong, she accompanied her adoptive father George Taufer to have his eyes treated by Jose Rizal in March 1895. He had been exiled for his vocal opposition to the abuses of the Spanish colonial government. Through this, she became Rizal's final romantic partner.
After he was executed by the Spaniards on 30 December 1896, she joined the revolutionary forces in Cavite. After a few months, she returned to Hong Kong after confronting the Governor General about the oppression she and her adoptive homeland experienced.
She eventually found a new love in Vicente Abad. She taught English in Manila and Cebu before dying of tuberculosis in her native land on 14 March 1905.
Tomorrow, 10 August 2026, the Dapitan City Government, NHCP Museo ni Jose Rizal Dapitan, Las Damas De Rizal Philippines, and Balay Hamoy Museum will hold a commemorative program at the Rizal Shrine Dapitan, Zamboanga del Norte.
