Architectural Inspirations #18: MIT Media Lab

The original Wiesner Building (1985) by I. M. Pei, later expanded with Fumihiko Maki’s New Media Lab (2010). Two Pritzker laureates, two generations of architecture -- connected into one creative ecosystem.

Maki’s glass-and-white extension is all about transparency and connection. Its layered glass-and-aluminum facade acts like a veil, filtering light and heat while offering glimpses of the experimentation within. Inside, visible labs and circulation encourage chance encounters and cross-disciplinary collaboration.

Architectural Inspirations #17: Hudson Yards, NY

Three very different ideas of what architecture can do.

The Vessel is undeniably striking -- a $200-million sculptural landmark of interconnected stairways. But beyond the spectacle, I couldn't help asking: what is it really for, and was it worth it? An interesting debate on architecture, practicality, and social impact.

The Shed, meanwhile, is literally designed to move -- its massive outer shell rolls out to transform the building for different performances and events.

But my favorite is the High Line. Once an abandoned elevated freight railway, it was repurposed into a public park and urban promenade. More than a destination, it becomes a transitional space -- allowing you to experience the city as you move through it.

Architectural Inspirations #11: Harry Elkins Widener Memorial Library

The Harry Elkins Widener Memorial Library stands as one of Harvard University's most iconic landmarks. Built in 1915 and funded by Eleanor Elkins Widener in memory of her son, Harry Elkins Widener -- a passionate book collector who perished aboard the RMS Titanic -- the library became both a tribute and a lasting gift to education.

Designed in the Beaux-Arts style, its grand columns, symmetrical composition, and monumental scale reflect the architectural ideals of dignity, permanence, and scholarship. Today, Widener remains the intellectual heart of Harvard, housing millions of volumes and serving as one of the world's most important academic research libraries.
