My take on the resolution as a YOUNG ARCHITECT! ☺️

Recently, PRBoA Resolution No. 08, s. 2026 introduced new guidelines para sa Diversified Architectural Experience (DAE), including a requirement na ang Architect-Mentor ay dapat at least five years nang registered and licensed Architect bago siya maaaring mag-mentor at pumirma sa DAE logbook.

Personally, I think maganda naman ang intention.

Tama lang na higpitan ang logbook signing. Hindi dapat pumipirma ang Architect kung hindi naman talaga niya supervised ang apprentice. Hindi rin dapat maging "pirma lang" ang mentorship dahil ang purpose ng DAE ay magkaroon tayo ng actual professional training bago maging Architect.

Isa rin sa pinakamagandang provisions dito ay ang emphasis on fair employment and compensation.

Kung ang apprentice ay full-time na nagtatrabaho, gumagawa ng drawings, nagde-design, nagko-coordinate, nagso-site, at nagco-contribute sa projects ng firm, then yes, they deserve fair compensation and proper employment conditions.

Experience should never be an excuse for exploitation.

Pero: Bakit five years agad ang requirement para maging mentor?

I understand the intention. The Board wants experienced Architects to supervise future Architects.

But here's the question:

Does five years of having a license automatically make someone a better mentor?

May Architect na 3 years pa lang licensed pero active na active sa practice, handling projects, doing site supervision, coordinating with engineers, dealing with clients, studying codes, and continuously improving professionally.

At possible rin namang may Architect na 10 years nang licensed pero very limited ang actual practice.

So perhaps years of licensure should not be the only measurement of someone's capacity to mentor.

May practical effect din ito, especially sa mga katulad kong nasa provinces.

Hindi lahat ng lugar maraming Architects. Mas kaunti pa ang Architects na may five years of licensure, active practice, willing mag-mentor, at may capacity kumuha ng apprentice.

We might solve the problem of questionable mentorship, but unintentionally create another problem:

Fewer legitimate opportunities for future Architects to complete their DAE.

Maybe a better approach is a "tiered or competency-based mentorship system." Suggestion lang haha

For example, after 3 years of active professional practice, an Architect may qualify as a junior mentor after completing a PRBoA/IAPOA mentorship orientation chuchu, maintaining good professional standing, and demonstrating actual practice.

Limited muna, maybe one or two apprentices.

Then after five years of active practice, saka magkaroon ng full mentoring privileges.

This way, hindi natin binababa ang standards. We actually make the standards more meaningful.

And perhaps mas kailangan nating tutukan hindi lang kung "Ilang taon nang Architect ang mentor?"

Mas magandang itanong:

"Ano ba talaga ang natutunan ng apprentice?"

Na-expose ba siya sa actual design process?

Construction documents?

Building laws and codes?

Specifications?

Coordination with allied professionals?

Site supervision?

Client meetings?

Contracts and project management?

Professional ethics?

Because at the end of the day, DAE should not just be about completing hours and collecting signatures. It should be about developing competent future Architects.

And we also need to remember that mentors and architectural firms need protection too.

Fair compensation is important, but regulations should also recognize the realities of small architectural practices. We should create standards that protect apprentices without making mentorship so difficult or expensive that smaller firms stop accepting them altogether.

So for me, the principle should be simple:

Protect the apprentice without punishing the mentor.

Protect the integrity of DAE without limiting opportunities for young Architects like us hehe

And most importantly,

Don't measure mentorship by time alone. Measure it through competence, ethics, actual practice, and the ability to teach.

Because the future of our profession isn't only about producing better Architects.

It's also about producing better mentors who will train the Architects after us. Kahit nga mga master architects may mga naging mentor.

Maganda ang direction ng Resolution No. 08. But perhaps this is also an opportunity for the profession to have a deeper conversation about what real mentorship should look like.

Raise the standards, yes. But let's make sure we also keep the doors open for the next generation.

Yun lang! Wala naman ibang mag-aangat sa ating propesyon kundi tayo din mga kapwa ko Arkitektong Pilipino.
