Local Building Officials should require elevators to be equipped with Earthquake device. So in times of Earthquake, passengers riding the lift will be automatically be brought to nearest landing and egress the elevator and shutdown lift operation. This is to prevent vertical motion of elevators during tremors to avoid possible and further damage of equipment, structure and entrapment of passengers and potential fatality.

A fire is very likely to follow after a tremor. It is very important that passengers should have zero chances of entrapment in the elevator during this type of event.
