The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and the Embassy of Hungary in Manila reaffirm the stronger ties and enhanced mutual labor cooperation between the two countries during the kick-off celebration of The Philippines โ Hungary Friendship Week today, 10 March 2025 at the DMW Central Office in Mandaluyong City.
Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac said that event highlights the growing, enduring friendship and collaboration between the Philippines and Hungary, with the significant milestone of opening the Migrant Workers Office in Budapest last year.
The friendship week is also in line with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.โs directive to strengthen bilateral labor relations in ensuring better opportunities and enhanced protection of the rights and welfare of Filipino migrant workers.
โWe are thankful to Ambassador Tita Tรณth, Her Excellency, who has been with us since the start of, should I say, the robust labor relations between our nations,โ Secretary Cacdac said.
Secretary Cacdac revealed that for the past two to three years, there have been about 9,000 to 10,000 Filipino workers in Hungary who are thriving in their chosen fields and have significantly contributed to the Hungarian economy. These workers range from automotive technicians, machine operators, truck drivers, logistics professionals, and hotel, farm and warehouse workers.
Her Excellency Ambassador Titanilla Tรณth LI.M meanwhile said that the Friendship week is a celebration of the enduring bond between the two nations that was forged through mutual respect and commitment to welfare to the people of both countries.
She highlighted the key milestone in the collaboration with the recent establishment of the Migrant Workers Office (MWO) in Budapest in 2024.
Tรณth then revealed that the Philippines is one of the top three countries and the only one in Asia where Hungary can accept guest workers, since both countries are Christian-dominated and share the same lifestyle and beliefs.
She expressed positive outputs on the ongoing negotiations for the bilateral labor agreements due to the strict legal systems of both countries, particularly the laws and campaign against illegal recruitment.
โWe hope that 2025 will be the year when (we) conclude the memorandum of understanding of labor cooperation, maybe in Budapest, which is already in the pipeline,โ Ambassador Tรณth said.
The friendship celebration between the two countries features cultural performances, โKamustahanโ with OFWs working in Hungary, awarding of livelihood assistance for OFW beneficiaries of the National Reintegration Center for OFWs, and a Job Fair with around 3,000 jobs for Hungary.
