GOOD PLANNING CREATES RESILIENT COMMUNITIES.

The recent heavy rains remind us that sustainability and disaster resilience should be considered from the very beginning of the planning and design process.

Projects like the QC Circle Retention Pond and Vertis North Rain Garden show how thoughtful landscape and urban planning can work with nature to help manage stormwater and reduce flooding.

The recent heavy rains in Metro Manila and nearby provinces have once again shown that innovative flood-mitigating structures are critical to disaster risk management.

The Quezon City government recently shared photos of rainwater collected by the newly opened retention pond at Quezon Memorial Circle.

Inaugurated last month, the facility aims to alleviate flooding, with a capacity to store up to 651 cubic meters of water during the rainy season.

“Sa kabila ng patuloy na pagbuhos ng ulan, pansamantalang naiipon ang tubig-ulan sa ating Retention Pond upang makabawas sa banta ng pagbaha,” said Mayor Joy Belmonte.

Elsewhere in the city, the Rain Garden at Vertis North was also highlighted as a practical example of integrating nature-based drainage into dense commercial hubs.

The Rain Garden is a lush open field that acts like a natural sponge, absorbing rainwater and releasing it gradually into the natural waterway. It can store up to 3,000 cubic meters of water during heavy rains. Aside from helping reduce flooding, the Rain Garden also doubles as a relaxing space for morning jogs or casual afternoon strolls during sunny days.
