Gabby Lopez isn’t leaving: Family majority closes ranks around ABS-CBN

Billionaire Gabby Lopez may be cashing out of the family holding company, but he’s putting money back into ABS-CBN Corp., challenging any notion that his recent deal with Ramon S. Ang marked a retreat from the family media empire.

He jointed two other Lopez family branches and committed P2.2 billion of their personal resources to ABS-CBN.

That vote of confidence sent ABS-CBN shares sharply higher on Thursday, with the stock jumping nearly 17 percent to its highest level in a year.

The peso weakened against the United States (US) dollar on Thursday, Aug. 13, closing at ₱61.343 from ₱61.18 last Wednesday, Aug. 12.

According to the Bankers Association of the Philippines (BAP), the local currency reached an intraday low of ₱61.44 and a high of ₱61.18 after opening at ₱61.2.

Total trading volume rose to over $1.7 billion from Wednesday’s $1.463 billion.
