A few electrification tips for home owners from the CEO of BES Pakistan,
Hello I'm Ahmed Jarral Master in Electrical Engineering from UCLA settled in USA.
The point of writing to you is a few month ago one of my best buddy purchased a house in DHA-2 Islamabad the builder is well renowned, after investing a lot on his home back in Pakistan one day on a call he told me that he got some electrical issues which can't be sorted by the builder's electrician. Thing was that the load on his three phase distribution box was not balanced. On one phase he'd consume more than the rest of the phase.
So for total 5 Air Conditions which he ran for 24 hours would consume 211.2kwh and in meantime he'd be wasting around 38kwh of energy into cables resistance causing heat. 38x30= 1140kwh(units) of energy wasted in a Month. Which equals to around 20-30 thousand PKR.
Later engineer back in Islamabad visited his house and found out the load wasn't balanced plus two separate neutral was running into each of his room. One of 2.5mm and 2nd of 4mm. 4mm cable can carry 25-30amp of load.
According to NEC we use a dedicated wire (live) for Air Conditioning. Neutral is looped. So extra cables of around 1500 meter was utilized. Which makes around PKR 120,000 wasted.
Secondly, when he'd power in the iron, he'd hear sizzling or sparking notice from the fan. Now what's the link of Iron with the ceiling fan even the fan was turned off?
I'll be positing few pictures as a proof.
> Always ask your builder or contractor to hire someone who at least knows about NPFA70 2014 electrical codes. 99% of them are following 1990s routine.
> Don't blindly trust your builder or mouth of words. In Pakistan the electrician trade is someone joins a working electrician (we never know his educational or learning status) as an apprentice and the cycles goes on whatever the senior tells is without any thinking is right.
> Load Distribution.
> Know your Junction boxes location and if that junction box is accessible or you'll have to cut your gypsum ceiling.
> Neutral looping.
> Joints Soldered and copper connector, receptacles, switches socket tight screwed.
> Rightly gauges cables being used.
> Workmanship guarantee. For at least 12 months from the date of completion.
Electrification is the nervous system of your building always remember.

For Smart Switches (POW) (turn your lights on/off from your phone any where in the world) you'll need a dedicated control wire, if you're constructing a new building run a 1mm wire for smart switches (in this decade smart switches will replace triditional switches) move with the flow.
You can still change your triditional switches to smart switches at some cost.
