تازہ پانی کے ذخیروں میں کمی اور تیزی سے بڑھتی ہوئی آبادی کی بڑھتی ہوئی طلب کے باعث پانی کی فی کس دستیابی کم سے کم تر ہوتی جا رہی ہے لہٰذا پاکستان پانی کے سنگین بحران کی طرف بڑھتا جا رہا ہے۔ رواں سال، موسمیاتی تبدیلی کے باعث آب گیری علاقہ (کیچمنٹ ایریاز) میں بارشوں کا سلسلہ نارمل مقدار سے بھی کم رہا، جس کی وجہ سے ہمارے دریاؤں میں پانی کا بہاؤ آج تک کی کم ترین سطح پر پہنچ چکا ہے۔
انڈس ریور سسٹم اتھارٹی (ارسا) نے اپنے حالیہ اجلاسوں میں انڈس بیسن سسٹم میں پانی کی شدید قلت کی طرف اشارہ کیا گیا ہے۔ پنجاب میں سردی کی فصلوں کے لیے زرعی پانی کا ذخیرہ تاریخی اوسطوں سے 40 فیصد کم رہا۔ ہمارا 90 فیصد سے زیادہ تازہ پانی زراعت میں استعمال ہوتا ہے اور ہماری 60 فیصد آبادی بالواسطہ یا بلاواسطہ زراعت سے وابستہ ہے۔


شہروں میں پینے کے پانی کی طلب میں اضافہ ہو رہا ہے کیوں کہ شہر پھیلتے جا رہے ہیں جبکہ وہاں معقول یا محتاط اربن واٹر مینجمنٹ موجود نہیں۔ کراچی کے کئی علاقے تو پہلے سے ہی کیپ ٹاؤن کے ڈے زیرو جیسی صورتحال کا سامنا کر رہے

According to a research study on water resources of Pakistan, approximately water having economic values of $70 billion is being thrown into sea every year due to non-construction of water reservoirs. A water starved country, which has the foreign reserve of only $20 billion, can’t afford throwing water of economic value of $70 billion every year into sea.
