𝗦𝗡𝗔𝗞𝗘 𝗔𝗡𝗔𝗧𝗢𝗠𝗬:-
This diagram shows the internal and skeletal anatomy of a venomous Vaperidae snake, specifically illustrates a male venomous Rattlesnake due to the te**es and solenoglyphous fang type.
Non-venomous snakes lack the venom gland, duct, and specialized fangs.
#𝟭 *𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗱 & 𝗩𝗲𝗻𝗼𝗺 𝗗𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺*
- *𝗦𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗼𝗴𝗹𝘆𝗽𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗙𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘀*:
Long, hollow, hinged front fangs that fold back when the mouth is closed. They rotate forward to inject venom during a bite.
- *𝗩𝗲𝗻𝗼𝗺 𝗚𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱*:
Large gland behind the eye that produces and stores venom.
- *𝗩𝗲𝗻𝗼𝗺 𝗗𝘂𝗰𝘁*:
Tube connects the venom gland to the base of the fang, delivering venom during a strike.
- *𝗠𝗮𝘅𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮 𝗕𝗼𝗻𝗲*:
Upper jaw bone that the fang attaches to. In vipers, it rotates to erect the fang.
- *𝗘𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗰𝗹𝗲*:
Muscle that contracts to rotate the maxilla and pitch the fang forward.
- *𝗝𝗮𝗰𝗼𝗯𝘀𝗼𝗻'𝘀 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝘀
(𝗩𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘀𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻)*:
Sensory organ in the roof of the mouth. The forked tongue picks up scent particles and delivers them here to "smell" the environment.
- *𝗧𝗼𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗲*:
Forked, used to collect chemical particles from the air for the Jacobson's organs.
- *𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗮*:
Windpipe, extends to near the front of the mouth so the snake can breathe while swallowing large prey.
#𝟮 *𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 & 𝗖𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺*
- *𝗥𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗟𝘂𝗻𝗴*:
Greatly elongated and functional. Snakes rely mostly on the right lung for breathing.
- *𝗟𝗲𝗳𝘁 𝗟𝘂𝗻𝗴*:
Highly reduced or absent in many species to save space in the narrow body.
- *𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁*:
Three-chambered, positioned about 1/4 down the body. Pumps blood through the elongated body.
- *𝗩𝗲𝗻𝗮 𝗖𝗮𝘃𝗮*:
Large vein returning deoxygenated blood to the heart.
- *𝗘𝘀𝗼𝗽𝗵𝗮𝗴𝘂𝘀*:
Muscular tube carrying food from the mouth to the stomach. Highly stretchable.
#𝟯 *𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺*
- *𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗰𝗵*:
Elongated, J-shaped organ where initial digestion occurs with strong acids/enzymes.
- *𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿*:
Very long, reddish-brown organ. Handles metabolism, detoxification, and bile production.
- *𝗚𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗯𝗹𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗿*:
Small green organ storing bile from the liver to digest fats.
- *𝗣𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀*:
Produces digestive enzymes and regulates blood sugar. Located near the gallbladder.
- *𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲*:
Long, coiled tube where most nutrient absorption happens.
- *𝗟𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲*:
Shorter, wider section that absorbs water and compacts waste.
- *𝗖𝗹𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗮*:
Common chamber at the tail base where digestive, urinary, and reproductive tracts exit.
#𝟰 *𝗨𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺*
- *𝗞𝗶𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘆𝘀*:
Paired, elongated organs filtering waste from blood. Snake kidneys are arranged one in front of the other, not side by side.
- *𝗨𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿*:
Tube carrying urine from kidneys to the cloaca. Snakes excrete uric acid as a semi-solid white paste to conserve water.
- *𝗧𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝘀*:
Paired male reproductive organs producing s***m. Females would have ovaries in a similar position.
#𝟱 *𝗦𝗸𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗹 & 𝗡𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺*
- *𝗦𝗸𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄*:
Snakes can have >300 vertebrae, each with a pair of ribs except in the tail. This gives them flexibility. No limbs or limb girdles.
- *𝗦𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗱*:
Runs through the vertebrae, protected by the vertebral column. Controls movement and reflexes.
