Architecture rooted in climate, topography, and Cypriot vernacular

Typology and Architectural Form

The floor plan adopts a U-shaped configuration, inspired by principles of Cypriot vernacular architecture. This typology provides clarity, hierarchy, and a strong relationship with the landscape. The U-shape divides the programme into three distinct wings:

Entrance & Kitchen Wing,
Public Living Wing,
Private Sleeping Wing.
At the heart of the house sits a shaded, wind-protected courtyard, functioning as the central gathering space. It is conceived as an outdoor room — a cool refuge during the hottest months, and a social extension of the interior.

Smaller terraces, outdoor seating pockets, and a pool oriented toward the views complete the exterior sequence, providing a variety of atmospheres throughout the day.

Typology and Architectural Form

Architecture rooted in climate, topography, and Cypriot vernacular

This project was developed in collaboration with architect Ben Hansen and Savvas Havatzias of HAKA Architects, serving as the local architect. Located on a quiet rural site in central Cyprus, surrounded by almond trees, forests and distant mountains, Almond Tree House is conceived as a contemporary dwelling shaped directly by climate, orientation, and landscape.

OPTION A - THE 25M2 CUBE (INTERNALLY)

This option adopts the structure of 4 smaller cubes, to make up one
large 5m internal cube. The 4 cube concepts relates to the 4 main
spaces within the brief: Sleeping, Bathing, Cooking & Sitting/Working.
The 5x5 internal dimension breaks down into a 1.25m smaller grid,
which allows for a variety of construction methods to allow for
ease of delivery and install. A fold-able ‘Murphy Bed’ maximise
the use of the space, and additionally conceals the bed should
the ‘Cube’ module not be purchased solely as a separate
temporary living space.

FACADE CONCEPT

The modular construction is characterised by 3 direct openings in
the building form. The openings are positioned at bed & desk height,
and bench heights to connect to the functionality of the interior
layout. A 3rd opening is created above the bathroom, connecting to
the sky and tree canopies typical within most urban back gardens,
The openings are then chamfered in 2 directions each, adding a
sculpted quality to this simple, modular design.

OPTION B - THE 25M2 CUBE (EXTERNALLY)

Option B adopts the same criteria explored in Option A, but
squeezes the module of construction down to a 5x5m dimension
made up of 4 x 2.5m perfect cubes.
As with Option A, large window positions are located to align with
the grid module and can be altered to focus on views as desired.

The design explores compact, modular living units tailored to the typical dimensions of Dublin housing—most notably the common 6-meter-wide plot found across thousands of city properties, with depths ranging from 10 to 50 meters.

Both Option A and Option B propose a 25m² cube configuration, addressing the core domestic functions of Sleeping, Bathing, Cooking, and Sitting/Working.

Option A develops a 5m x 5m internal space, organized into a grid of four smaller cubes. This layout is based on a 1.25m modular grid, offering flexibility in construction techniques and simplifying transport and assembly. A fold-away Murphy bed is integrated into the design, enabling multi-functional use of the space and allowing the unit to serve either as a standalone micro-home or as an extension to an existing residence.

Option B applies the same spatial logic and interior zoning but interprets the cube externally as four precise 2.5m x 2.5m modules, maintaining the overall 5m x 5m footprint. Window openings align with the modular grid and can be strategically placed to frame specific views, enhancing the connection between interior and exterior.

Facade Concept:
The building envelope features three distinct openings, each thoughtfully aligned with interior functions—at bed, desk, and bench height—to reinforce usability and connection to the outdoors. A fourth opening, positioned above the bathroom, offers a vertical view to the sky and surrounding tree canopy, a common feature in Dublin’s urban gardens. These openings are chamfered on two axes, adding sculptural depth and character to the otherwise simple, modular form.

The layout is anchored by a generous central island, allowing multiple participants to work comfortably side by side.
