Mindsailors Industrial Design

Mindsailors Industrial Design Award-winning, international industrial design studio. We give bold ideas shape. On time. With an eye trained on production costs.

We treat each project individually and carry it out comprehensively - from professional product visualisation, through prototyping, to its implementation in production. We work in one location, combining the competencies of industrial design and embedded development, allowing us to fully control the process of product development. The fruits of our work are often awarded, which is a satisfying con

You're cancelling a subscription. You click "cancel." A screen appears. The "Stay" button is large, bright, front and center. "Confirm cancellation" is grey, small, tucked at the bottom - one extra scroll away.

You almost stayed. That was the point. 💡

This is a dark pattern - a design choice that steers you toward what's good for the company, not for you. It rarely starts with bad intent. It starts with a clean A/B test and a deadline two days out. Nobody says "let's manipulate users." The feature ships anyway.

We wrote about what drives these decisions - and what's starting to make them expensive. 👉 https://mindsailors.com/the-product-you-bought-is-not-the-product-you-own

The European Innovation Council’s latest deep-tech report highlights edge computing as one of the innovations shaping future product development. For hardware teams, that points to devices that rely less on constant cloud connectivity and process more data locally for greater resilience and scalability.

🎲 What makes a physical product feel "right" in your hands?

It's the satisfying click when you press a button. The intuitive weight distribution. The way visual feedback responds to your touch.

At Mindsailors, we engineer these interactions from the molecular level up. For DICE+, we developed a custom conductive polymer to enable touch-sensitive surfaces, balanced weight distribution for fair gameplay, and illuminated numbers that respond to motion - earning us an iF Design Gold Award.

💡 Five words that change everything: "Let's design for the factory."

Not the showroom. Not the investor pitch. The actual production line where your product will be made thousands of times.

✨ That mindset shift? That's where magic happens!

Biomimicry is not a silver bullet. Let's be honest about that.

It's one of the most promising design methodologies available - but applying it commercially comes with real friction:

⚖️ Scale. Gecko spatulae are a few hundred nanometres wide. Replicating that geometry at commercial volume is still an unsolved manufacturing problem.

🔬 Complexity. You can't copy a natural system wholesale. Engineers must identify which aspects are essential and which are evolutionary side effects irrelevant to the challenge.

💰 Cost. Biologists, materials scientists, and engineers don't share vocabularies or research timelines. That cross-disciplinary coordination is expensive upfront - though lifecycle costs often favour biomimetic solutions over time.

🌍 Knowledge gaps. We've described roughly 1.5-2 million species out of many millions thought to exist - and each extinction eliminates solutions we never got to study.

These aren't reasons to avoid bionic design. They're reasons to go in with clear expectations.

We've put together an overview of bionic design - opportunities, methodology, and honest limitations: https://mindsailors.com/bionic-design-nature-s-inspiration-in-modern-industrial-design

Every second saved in assembly, across thousands of units, adds up.

Closely related to DFM is Design for Assembly (DFA) - a discipline focused specifically on how a product goes together on the production line. Fewer parts, simpler connections, components that are easier to orient and fasten - these aren't just engineering preferences. They have a direct impact on production cost. 🔩

At Mindsailors, DFM and DFA are part of the same conversation: reviewing the design not just for what it does, but for how it will be built and assembled at volume.

Investing in this before production starts is considerably less expensive than addressing it after. ✅

You bought a printer. It worked fine for years on third-party ink. Then one firmware update quietly decided it wouldn't anymore. No warning. No refund. Just an "incompatible cartridge" error - and an hour of digging to figure out what HP actually changed. 🖨️

The hardware didn't change. The terms did.

This is part of a pattern Cory Doctorow calls ensh*ttification: attract users with genuine value, wait until they're locked in, then quietly degrade the experience to extract more profit.

We wrote about the mechanics behind it, and what's starting to make it legally and commercially expensive.

AI hardware complexity doesn't respect sequential design timelines.

Deloitte's 2026 hardware outlook highlights what we've been seeing in projects: AI hardware now creates simultaneous pressure across power, thermal, interconnect, and mechanical systems. That kind of complexity doesn't survive sequential decisions.

When mechanical, thermal, and electrical design happen in parallel, you catch conflicts before tooling. When they're sequential, you find out at the worst possible time.

If your product has any AI or connected hardware inside, it's worth asking when in the process those disciplines actually start talking to each other.

💡 Here's a counterintuitive truth: investing in user research reduces costs.

McKinsey's five-year study of 300 companies found that top-performing design organisations share prototypes with users early and iterate continuously - while nearly 60% of companies only test prototypes internally, late in development. The companies that get users involved earlier consistently outperform on revenue and shareholder returns. ➡️ https://mck.co/4tpJNpm

The logic is simple: a problem found in a sketch costs a conversation to fix. The same problem found after launch costs a redesign, a recall, or a lost customer.

📊 Smart decision-makers understand that research isn't an expense - it's risk mitigation.

This is why we integrate user research into every design phase - from initial brief to final prototype - ensuring products work right the first time, not after expensive redesigns.

The same design can perform very differently depending on who manufactures it.

DFM isn't a generic checklist. It's specific - to the manufacturing technology, to the subcontractor's capabilities, to the client's budget, and to the quality standards the product needs to meet. ⚙️

Part of our DFM process involves helping clients identify the right manufacturing partners and then fine-tuning the design to match what those partners can actually deliver - not what an ideal factory might do in theory.

That specificity is what makes the difference between a design that looks right on paper and one that comes out right on the production floor. 📋

✖️ Your engineer says it's impossible.
🗝️ Your designer says it's essential.
💰 Your manufacturer says it'll cost a fortune.

Welcome to product development! 😅

That's where DFM comes in—finding the sweet spot where innovation, manufacturability, and budget all align.
