The makings and unfolding of the 2022 Ocean_Collection 🧜
These past months, with things still running a bit slow due to the aftereffects of the pandemic, I got busy in the shop revamping a few pieces and, as it often goes, started tinkering on a couple ideas about a new line with a deeper connection to the ocean, my roots and family.
Growing up in Portugal during the years leading to the Revolução dos Cravos (the Carnation Revolution), the only access to foreign culture, new trends and sports industry developments we had was through magazines my parents used to bring us back from their business trips to the UK. Skateboarding, surfing, and the likes were an exotic and exciting freedom we longed to unravel and put to “good” use but access to the equipment was either impossible or way to difficult to afford on pocket money at the time. That being said, my brothers, inventive and resolved as always, started crafting their own boards in our father’s backyard shop. With tools and material available, a few mishaps, hammered finger tips and glue in the hair later, some assembled planks shaped into floatable boards to ride the waves in the Algarve. Being water people, sailing, swimming and other water sports pretty much came naturally to us so surfing was an instinctive move and trying it out as well as passing it along to my own kids was a no-brainer as I still remember the first time I rode a surfboard myself.
Now, with the leisure to custom my own pieces, this Ocean line was for sure meant to arise in my design and needless to say, I’m pretty stoked about it 😉
