Who would have thought that Charles Rennie Mackintosh would find his way into a more traditional interior? His concept of “Total Design” (Gesamtkunstwerk) brought together architecture, furniture, materials, light and atmosphere, and was also rooted in the coexistence of opposites — Japanese influence meeting local tradition, geometric rigour alongside immersive and emotional atmospheres.
Perhaps this was precisely what Mackintosh was looking for.
Or simply not to match, and let beauty happen.
