COULD HAVE BEENS.
Studio projects in contest, not built but not forgotten.
Portugália Belém.

As any Architect and Designer knows, not everything you draw or plan turns into something effective or real. Sometimes projects with different types of scale go through different types of pre-selections, and we all know that there’s only room for one at the crossing line.
Architecture is capable of producing duos, famous collabs and even pop-ups in dialogue with other artistic backgrounds, but each project needs to be matched with the creative DNA which ultimately delivers it. It’s a one on one philosophy, in the end.
In a way, Architecture and Design are mostly about ownership of a creative direction, and of a creative output. As such, projects which we have been through in terms of contests or competitions will always showcase a particular way to understand space, and time, and a client’s briefing.
For Portugália Belém we went through months of understanding the extraordinary references of the area, and how the original building evolved and aged (and therefore needed to be maintained/preserved while being transformed into something singular and enticing once again).
In the end, our proposal did not find its way through, and what we planned in detail and thought of as an overall start to finish look was not chosen.
This project is part of our “could have been” folder, but it is not forgotten at all. In a way it reminds us daily of what we can do, and excell at.
It also showcases our many strengths as a Studio and as a Team, and what defines us in many ways: the ability to design something which seems inherent and coherent, and always, always, one step ahead.

COMPORTA.
Typecast versus Outcast.
A project which defies the odds.
Everything which suddenly becomes ubiquitous tends to have very humble startups.
Rough areas in historical cities become hotspots when someone with a vision takes advantage of lower prices, and sees potential where others see doom.
Businesses spruce up, heritage is back on track, and what was once a tricky problem becomes an evident solution. Mitte in Berlin, Nolita in New York, Soho in London, you name it.
The same can be said about the potential of Comporta, which nobody saw coming (or predicted). What is now on everyone’s radar started very low key indeed.
What was once only a farmers and fishermen cottage village known internationally by the Royals of Monaco and by Italian Aristocracy, is now known all over the world (Nicole Kidman wink wink).
That poses a truly tricky question: what is the Comporta style (if there is any)?
As we finish up a new Residential project there, the questions of avoiding a “pastiche” of stereotypes were always present.
What most now consider a typical “Comporta” house, or building framework, is anything but.
Our project reflects that anti-typecast approach, while retaining everything which is important in the region, from ceramics and textile traditions, to the rough and tough raw elements which made it an almost outcast destination.
That critical sense produced a whimsical, singular and unique visual storytelling which we will unveil soon.
Now a preview, soon a full picture of what many never saw coming.

SALT.
Temporary x Temperamental.
How an unusual, unique and unexpected material became part of our DNA.

As a Studio and practice we take materiality at heart, conceptually and technically.
What we develop and do always has craft at its core, and we never run away to try the roads less travelled in what Design is concerned.
In a way, we like to take the roads which might have fewer traffic signs, and the odd bump, but which lead to much more than pit stops.
Salt is now part of our DNA, and visual identity, essentially because we did not look at it as something disposable or distracting, but as something distinctive.
The road to work with it as a base for a bespoke furniture series was not easy, and it took a few detours. We did it nonetheless, primarily because we understood that we could change a few paradigms about form and function, and also because we felt we could ignite an interesting debate about formal/informal thinking.
As you saw first at AUSTA, you would not think about sitting on a salt bench or leaving a book on a salt totem as you entered a Restaurant.
We did it first, and we proved something else, which is also quite important: if you have an idea based on careful research it may not always work, but you will have a great argument to lean (or sit) on.
When it works, it’s magic.
Just add a pint of salt.

SETÚBAL.
Perez House.
Design as Poetry.

The city of Setúbal is somewhat still under wraps (and layered) in many singular ways.
For a city that was the birthplace and hub for some of the country’s most advanced industries like fisheries, canning, shipbuilding and paper/pulp processing, amongst so many things, it somehow managed to stay hidden from a prime position and attention span.
That “huis clos” created a particular style, a particular way to build, and a particular way to be.
That identity, which also plays with the eclectic effect of an open harbour surrounded by the extraordinary landscape of Arrábida, is also the one which formed an extremely tight-knit community over the centuries.
Our new project in the city, Perez House, reflects that eclectic style with extraordinary Art Nouveau references, as well as nods to local craft.
In fact, our project reflects what attracted so many people along the centuries (even Hans Christian Andersen dropped by) to the city, as it is an extraordinary medley of styles, an assemblage of sorts.
Perez House shares that extraordinary storytelling, and its uniqueness is that it reflects both place and people, while also being a creative exercise in singular Arts&Crafts (also referencing sculpture, painting, ceramics).
Every detail has a particular story, and every story leads to an almost poetic outlook.
What you will see is therefore a clever exercise in showcasing that not everything needs to be about size and scale, it just needs to make sense, and play with personal memories.
Tight-knit. Close to heart. Relatable.
Maybe that’s the true value of Design.

MINE(ral).
From DRAFT to CRAFT.
How everything started, scratch by scratch.

When you see a final product at any show or exhibition, you rarely think too much about how it’s done, and how it came about.
That process, which usually starts as an abstract idea of what is possible, then goes through many stages until it becomes probable.
For our recent bespoke copper furniture series developed with Nick Valentijn and ST VINCENTS, those stages are a visible (and tactile) part of what Nick went through at his Studio for weeks in a row.
As we remembered and recalled the beautiful textures we had witnessed at the Boliden Neves Corvo Mine, those same patterns were turned into singular patinas by brushing, scrubbing, polishing, gleaming and then cutting and cleaning, turning those organic forms into almost handprints on the copper canvas.
These “scratches” reveal our commitment to craft and materiality, and our utmost care for compelling storytelling.
They also reveal the incredible technical expertise employed in delivering the four-piece set on time.
Nick got his fingerprints deep on cake, as a reward.
There’s nothing like sharing the things you love, right?

SÃO MARÇAL.
The story of an extraordinary (complex) ceiling and roof.
We go above and beyond, and behind the scenes.

Craft is always at the core of what we do at the Studio, as is a deep grasp of all the materials we need to understand, use, transform and translate into any final structural form.
Sometimes a project has technical complexities which take a turn for the unexpected, as we find things which demand a twist and turn to what was planned initially (which Architect hasn’t been surprised by what she/he finds?).
The wood structure of the inner roof at SÃO MARÇAL, which exposes a complex and delicate “net” which is almost Lisbon in a nutshell, was so intricately challenging to grasp that it became a symbol for the project itself.
A house which is apparently simple from the outside usually hides truly complex (and layered) secrets, and that happened here.
As the saying goes, Lisbon has the ability to play its tricks just right.
What you can witness here is part of an extensive, experimental and exhaustive renovation, and the visible side of a lengthy restoration and singular re-structuring work.
All these adjectives cannot hide one simple fact: how something up in the air defined everything which lies beneath.
Some challenges defy the odds, others become a sort of oddity, the best can provoke an entire overhaul (as did this).
SÃO MARÇAL has a particular beauty in its reconfiguration of size and scale, and managed to overcome many constraints and complexities by translating vernacular codes into practical solutions.
You’ll see soon how it turned out.
Above and beyond, and just about to happen.

Lisbon Design Week 2026.
Double C.
A bespoke Collection defined by a Collaboration.

As we got back to the Studio on Monday morning after the hectic days of LDW26, and as Emails started to fill up our inboxes as usual and projects a bit around the country needed our full daily attention, we had 4 new “members” of the Team standing by as guardians (and reminders) of these last days.
An Armchair, a Wall-Light, an Ottoman and a Standing Lamp (tall as a lighthouse and shiny as a miner’s lantern) reminded us of months of going back and forth between Maastricht and Antwerp through calls and exchanges of sketches and drawings.
These 4 pieces represent a great team work and define the many possibilities of what a collaboration can bring to a table (besides good chocolate cake).
The process, meticulous and methodic, of creating something unique, was also whimsical and playful.
By putting many concepts and ideas to work (the Neves-Corvo Mine resources and researches, miner’s lamps old photos, levels of oxidation, erosion and corrosion angles, amongst so many things), alongside a beautiful exercise in creating something shaped by many hands, we figured out that it is possible to do something together which lasts.
The patina we now see on each piece, shining through thousands of different angles as the light hits our Gallery’s windows, showcase the serendipity of this challenge.
The 4 pieces formed a group, which has a particular setup, and works as a tandem.
There are 4 letters in (MINE)ral, and three add-ons.
4 pieces were made by 3 Studios.
7 letters in total, showcased on a city of 7 hills.
Now that’s serendipity.

Lisbon Design Week 2026.
PATINA.
The balance between possible and poetic.

As LDW26 kicked off, and as the idea we all had to do something singular took form, many things came to mind.
The first talks, calls, sketches, doubts, concepts and a few logistical problems to solve, soon turned into the fact that we had to put on a great show.
Not only to close a chapter, which started with the idea to work with copper, but also to push it further and turn it into objects which we could relate to, and which could be relatable.
As we opened our Gallery, and hundreds of people passed by, that idea also became theirs.
Those objects are not ours anymore (although you would have to kick-box Nick to move them), as they lift off.
Any pattern and texture you see in the set-piece was intentionally created, and it did not exactly happen by chance.
But even if we made everything from scratch again using the same methods and tools, and hands, it would not look the same. SERENDIPITY.
It defines us as a Team and as a Collab.
It also defines us as a creative force: you can’t shape, or change, everything alone.
There’s always the poetry of chance encounters.

Thank you to the hundreds who have visited us (and we’re still going on), and who saw and touched what touched us all in the beginning.
Together, always.
That did not happen by chance.
Our loving ST VINCENTS dog, Frida, is waiting back home in Antwerp for the big chance of getting a treat.

MINE(ral).
Lisbon Design Week 2026.
Studio : Gameiro x ST VINCENTS x Nick Valentijn.
Down a mine we go.
The Neves-Corvo experience (what some call the light at the end of a tunnel).

A few years ago the Studio did something singular which travelled around the world: a furniture collection with rock-salt.
By trying something new, and unorthodox, we gathered a lot of experience by going down a few mines and meeting the people that, well, make it happen.
At the comfort of our homes, and within a world constrained and cornered by Social Media, we sometimes forget where things come from, or how anything is made. For real.
We also forget who makes them, and how those people work.
Our research for this edition of LDW26 demanded a closer look about how copper is extracted, and created an opportunity to understand what we could do with it.
Our collaboration is therefore also with a fourth partner we now make visible: the Boliden Neves-Corvo Mine.
As such, we extend a warm thank you for all that we learned down under.
This exhibition is also part of the magic they provided. As hosts, and as teachers, we couldn’t have had better guidance, and inspiring insights.
Someone said that what happens in the deep, stays in the deep.
Well, something always manages to come up.
This is it.
Thank you to all the Team at the Mine for making this happen. Shining a light, as only they could.
