Competition entry.

The project is organised around a fully open central atrium, extending continuously through every floor and opening the building to the sky. Responding to Podgorica’s Mediterranean climate, the atrium brings an outdoor condition into the heart of the building, functioning not as conventional circulation but as an extension of the public space.

Healthcare, administration, culture and social activities are efficiently arranged around this open vertical space, connecting programmes, people and levels through light, movement and visual relationships.

The life of the neighbourhood can unfold across the building, blurring the boundary between interior and city.

Parallel and perpendicular concrete volumes overlap and slide past each other, creating courtyards, thresholds, sheltered spaces and double-height interiors. The roof slope is inherited from the existing farm building on the site, transforming its geometry into the generative logic of the new architecture.

A robust concrete base anchors the building, supporting a highly efficient timber structure above. Repetition, prefabrication, and exposed mass timber create a construction system that is light, precise, and resource-conscious.

Built into the hillside with minimal excavation, the project grows directly from the landscape, using its elongated form to stabilize the terrain while reducing impact on the site. Designed for adaptability, durability, and future reuse, the project transforms engineering logic into architectural clarity — where sustainability is not applied as a layer, but embedded in the very way the building stands, performs, and ages over time.

ONTOS

The interior is organised as a continuous spatial sequence, where the different programmatic elements are linked through thickened thresholds and subtle transitions. The main foyer acts as a hinge, connecting the various volumes while maintaining a clear reading of the whole.

The auditorium is more contained and dense, forming a space of focus and immersion, where materiality and acoustics shape the experience. Elsewhere, circulation spaces extend beyond movement, becoming places of pause and everyday occupation.

An interior defined by relationships, continuity, and shifts in scale.

ONTOS

The proposal for the Multi-Purpose Center of Lajes do Pico is based on a very clear premise: to build in a territory where the landscape is not a backdrop, but an active material of architecture.

The town rests on a lava fajã: the ground, the walls, the mineral thickness, and the direct relationship with the sea define a specific grammar, shaped by mass, roughness, shadow, and resistance. It is from this condition that the project is developed.

The proposal continues the geological composition of Lajes do Pico, allowing a construction to emerge that appears to rest upon the basaltic platform. Its presence is not the result of an isolated gesture, but of the way it organizes the site, mediates scales, and structures the program within a coherent system of volumes, with solid and void paths in a play of thickness and absence.

The architecture thus assumes a dual commitment: on one hand, to respond with clarity and rigor to the high functional demands of the program; on the other, to construct a spatial identity rooted in the Azorean territory, without resorting to literal references or decorative imagery. The building is understood as a mineral extension of the site: compact, durable, silent, and deeply connected to the volcanic materiality that characterizes the island.
