What is lost when architecture is translated into information? In the latest MASS TALK #5, we explored a transformation already reshaping architectural practice: projects are moving from drawings into continuous information models, shared across disciplines and throughout the design process.
Together with Marta Campos, José Carlos Lino and our BIM Manager Tânia Marques, we discussed how this shift goes far beyond software. is changing the way we collaborate, coordinate and make decisions. But it also requires us to rethink how intuition, abstraction and the freedom of the creative process coexist with increasingly structured systems.
One idea stood out: more information doesn’t necessarily mean better architecture or better projects. The challenge lies in knowing what information is needed, when to introduce it, and how to move between concept and detail without losing the essence of the project.
At MASSLAB, we believe architecture must take part in these wider conversations. Designing buildings also means questioning the processes, systems and relationships through which our industry is evolving.
Digital tools may change the language through which projects are produced. Our responsibility is to make sure its meaning doesn’t get lost in translation.
