In September, we celebrate Reef Pulse 5-year anniversary in pushing the boundaries of Passive Acoustic Monitoring and acoustic restoration of coral reefs globally.🎂
At Reef Pulse, we have recorded underwater sounds at more than 180 coral reef sites in the 3 oceans. This represents more than 70 years of cumulative recordings and hundreds of Terabytes. These recordings contain parrotfish grazing, groupers growling, whales vocalising, boats passing by, movements of fish schools, and dozens of different types of underwater events that our algorithms can detect. Each output from PAM data analysis is a crucial asset to implement management actions (e.g. species reintroduction, temporary no-go zone around grouper spawning grounds, boat speed limit adjustments to decrease impact on marine life, …). We work alongside stakeholders of marine conservation to save them time and money while upscaling their capacity for conserving coral reefs. Coral reefs are endangered and 90% could disappear by 2050, but 50% are already lost in some areas. Yet, coral reefs provide to more than 1 billion people in the world services like coastal protection, tourism, fisheries. There is urgency to act now.⏰
🎤 PAM is a terrific method to help upscale coral reef monitoring because it is standardised, non-intrusive, objective, and continuous. However, PAM has a dead angle: the evaluation of coral cover and habitat complexity. It’s like monitoring everything in a forest but the trees. Thus, photogrammetry is the perfect complementary tool to PAM. With a simple picture taking procedure, we can cover more than 100m² in 1 hour. The 3D reconstructions provide the size, shape, growth, erosion degree, recovery, rugosity, and many other metrics of each coral colony over time.
➡️ At Reef Pulse, we've been committed to the preservation and restoration of marine ecosystems for five years, and we want to celebrate this anniversary with those who share the same commitment. That’s why we’re offering photogrammetry reconstruction and analysis at each site for all contracts signed in September to acoustically monitor or restore coral reefs with our solutions.
