_______________
We design, we draw, we prepare detailed drawings. But what do we actually check on site?
Soil doesn’t follow a fixed recipe like concrete or steel.
It varies from one meter to another.
So what do we check, for example, during compaction?
We don’t just rely on lab reports. We follow the work directly on site, using a few simple, practical indicators:
– the ballast or crushed stone should have a well-graded mix, not uniform, but also without excessive variation between particle sizes; important: no excess fines
– the vibration of the compactor should be felt at a distance — a sign of good contact between particles
– when the roller passes, the soil should not behave elastically (settling and rebounding)
Towards the end of compaction, the surface aggregate should start to break under the action of the vi****or.
These are simple things, well known on site, but hard to understand from the design office alone. That’s why we try to be present on site as often as possible.
Those working on site, what’s your take? What other indicators do you use?
Is the compaction in the video good, or is there still work to be done?
