It’s Vintage Mic Monday! Today we’re taking a look at the Pearl TL-6C.

Pearl Microphones, like Milab, are known for our distinctive rectangular capsule technology, but the TL-6C took a different route.

Its compact, circular electret capsule and transformerless circuitry made it a practical tool for detailed recordings, especially when working at a distance from the source.

With its cardioid pickup pattern and high sensitivity, it was well suited for ambience, audience recording and other situations where the microphone needed to stay out of the way.

A different approach from Pearl's iconic rectangular capsule designs, proving that great microphone engineering comes in many forms.

Ella Fitzgerald captured in a moment with the Pearl RD-77. A throwback to an era when Pearl was starting to help shape the world of professional microphones.

In the late 1970s, Pearl and Milab went their separate ways, with Milab taking over the production and marketing of the microphones. For nearly 40 years, the two brands followed their own paths, sharing the same roots but building their own legacies.

In 2017, the story came full circle as Milab acquired Pearl, bringing the two brands together once again under the same ownership.

Vintage Mic Monday is back!

Today, we’re taking a look at the Pearl DC-96, where the DC-96 story began.

The first generation of the DC-96 was released under the Pearl name in 1967, built around Rune Rosander’s distinctive rectangular capsule, first developed in 1958.

In 1983, the DC-96 was updated and became the Milab DC-96B. It would go on to become one of the most iconic microphones in the Milab range, staying in production for decades.

In 2010, Milab launched the DC-96C, which was a completely new design with a transformerless output; the new 2900 rectangular capsule, a higher SPL rating, and significantly reduced self-noise.

Who knows, maybe one of these classics will find its way back into production?

Stay tuned…

VIP-60 or DC-196?

Both offer selectable polar patterns. Both let you control how you capture a source. But they shine in different situations.

Choose the VIP-60 when you’re looking for a dedicated vocal and instrument microphone with a detailed, natural character and a sparkly vocal sound. With 5 different polar patterns, the VIP-60 gives you plenty of ways to control the source and the room, and the roll-off filter is perfect for close-miking guitars and double basses.

Choose the DC-196 when versatility is the priority. Its compact size, selectable cardioid, omni, and figure-eight patterns make it an incredibly flexible tool for everything from vocals and acoustic instruments to piano, drums, and stereo recording. A matched pair of DC-196's allows you to record everything, and to record it really well.

A look back at the Milab D-37.

A dynamic microphone designed to deliver the rich, detailed sound of a condenser, combined with low sensitivity to background noise.

The D-37 was built with live performance in mind, but its bright sound and versatility made it equally at home in the studio.

Another chapter in the Milab story.

If you could only choose one microphone for your studio, what would it be?

We’d choose the DC-196.

The DC-196 is a remarkably compact large-diaphragm condenser microphone that punches well above its weight. Its compact size makes positioning easy, while the 2900 rectangular capsule delivers the open, detailed sound of a large-diaphragm condenser. With selectable polar patterns and excellent SPL handling, you get a microphone that can handle almost anything.

And if you’re building a studio, a matched pair of DC-196s gives you the flexibility to capture both mono sources and precise stereo recordings, catering to your and your artists' every need.

The best vocal recordings start with great singers, and of course, the right microphone.

The Milab VIP-60 gives you a detailed and natural vocal sound straight from the source, making it easier to build a great recording from the very first take.

Less processing. Less correction. More of the voice you actually recorded.

A microphone that helps the recording process move forward.

Some ideas stand the test of time. The Pearl TL4 was one of them.

Its separate front and back outputs made it possible to change the microphone’s polar pattern in post-production, a remarkably forward-thinking feature at the time.

40 years later, much has changed. But the DNA that connects Pearl to Milab is still visible in the way we approach microphones today.

Not all large-diaphragm capsules are created the same.

The DC-196 features the latest generation of Milab’s distinctive 2900 rectangular capsule, delivering an open, detailed sound with the natural character you’d expect from a high-end large-diaphragm condenser.

The DC-196 shines on transient-rich sources like acoustic instruments and, thanks to the unique properties of the rectangular capsule, it excels in recording situations where a smooth off-axis response is crucial.

A design that has been part of the Milab story for decades.

Still evolving. Still distinctly Milab.

Check out the DC-196 today.
