I don't repair many bowed instruments, but sometimes I get requests for repairs.

Considering that C.F. Martin had to emigrate to the USA to be able to build guitars freely, I think it's perfectly okay to repair the occasional bowed instrument.

This is a somewhat a simpler double bass, made of laminated parts, but sometimes even these sound surprisingly good!

No major difficulty in gluing the back to the frame, which had come loose when it was too close to a radiator. I see using water-based glue as a matter of course for these repairs. I prefer to use hot hide glue, as I know it holds well. It seems as if the back has come loose before, as there are old glue residues, which have run over the label. This have been a plastic glue or more correctly a PVC glue.

When the instrument was handed in, I saw that part of the veneer of the lid had been hit and some was missing. I offered to replace the missing part and insert a piece of spruce on the surface. It's not really that difficult, but the challenge that remains is to retouch the repair so that it looks as natural as possible.

Practice makes perfect.

Considering that it's Midsummer today, I'd like to take this opportunity to wish my followers here a Happy Midsummer!

My customer contacted me regarding his Ibanez John Scofield model. He wondered if we could do some service to it, now during his summer holiday. He uses it regularly and there was some problem with notes that wouldn't sustain and ring true. We decided that I would do a setup as the relief was much too generous and might be the cause?

Upon a more thorough inspection I soon realized that fretwear was a much more likely cause.

This is not so uncommon. If you look at it more objectively wear will be sorted in three categories:

1. Setup
2. Relevel
3. Refret

A relevel together with a setup worked fine this time!

Today I completed the work of optimizing the playability of this Epiphone Broadway from 1935. In connection with that, I experienced how important it is that the underside of the bridge body follows the contour of the sound board. All in all, the whole work took 6 hours, but it was amazing to follow the development of the improvement in the sound. Clearly noticeable and worth every minute!

This Flamenco Blanca built by legendary Luthier José Ramirez II holds a history of it's own.

Don't worry. It will not fall down. I am reinforcing the glued (Yes, that's right! Hot hide glue!) cracks with cleats and sometimes just needs gravity to hold up in the right way!

The guitar holds a history of it's own and there are still some questions not being answered yet. One could be: "Why is the number '48' marked on the edge of the top of the head stock?" Is it a serial number? Could be, but on the label it says 1947, as it's production year.

Now my long time customer approached me with this guitar to have it valued and repaired. It's background, or the little I know of it, is that it was bought by a Sea Captain located at Gotland and perhaps Visby. When he passed, his daughter brought it to a local music store and asked: "Is this worth keeping or should I throw it away?"

What really amazes and puzzles me is that, if her father went through all the trouble of going to Spain to buy a Flamenco Blanca guitar (this was pre internet, people!). How could it be worthless?

Now a lot of becoming famous luthiers have worked within other nameworthy luthier's workshops and perhaps the Ramirez workshop is one of the better known for this?

If there will be a noticeable inscription inside of the guitar of a Luthier who later became famous like 'Santos Hernandez' then the valued estimation I have given it would multiple.

However José Ramirez II passed a couple of years later (1952), but he is the one to have been said to solidified the company name. Not the originator but the settler.

There are still a couple of 'stones' that haven't been turned yet. Like why are there so many inlays in the head stock that don't match in quality of craftsmanship with the ones in the wings of the bridge? And why are there removed inlays in the fretboard that have been covered up with wood?

One guess I have is that it could have at some point become an annusement for the owner, but then again if the original owner is the only owner, how come?

Well the mystery continues.

As soon as I know. I will pass on the information to you.
