Running an SME means every new requirement comes with the same questions: What do I actually need to change? How much will it cost? And is there support available to help?

At the PBP 2026 SME Success Track, back for its third year, our Keynote Presentation Speaker, Edwin Lye, Assistant Chief Executive of Singapore National Employers Federation (SNEF) will unpack what the upcoming Workplace Fairness Act means in practical terms for SME employers, from hiring and performance management to grievances and exits.

More importantly, the session goes beyond compliance. SME owners and HR practitioners will also get an overview of government grants, schemes and workforce support that businesses can tap on to strengthen capabilities, redesign jobs and support transformation.

Walk away knowing:
• What you should start doing now to prepare for workplace fairness requirements
• Where employment risks may surface and how to manage them
• Which grants and support schemes could help offset transformation costs
• What practical advisory tools and resources are available, especially if you do not have a large HR team
• Where to turn when you need help navigating workforce challenges

Because for SMEs, building a stronger workforce should not mean adding more complexity.

Looking Ahead, Together | August Management Update

As we approach the three-quarter mark of 2026, our August Management Update gave us an opportunity to pause, reflect, and look ahead to what’s next.

Our department heads took turns to share an inside look at the work happening across their teams; giving everyone a better understanding of our priorities, the progress we’ve made, and how the different parts of IHRP can work together with greater synergy to achieve bigger goals.

As Aslam shared: “The potential is not what we do today, but what we imagine tomorrow to be.”

It was a timely reminder that while we recognise how far we’ve come, our biggest opportunities lie in how we continue to think ahead, collaborate and shape what’s possible together.

We also took the opportunity to thank Shirley Lim, our Deputy CEO, for her dedication and contributions to IHRP over the past 1.5 years. As Shirley returns to SWDA to take on a new project, we are grateful for the leadership, commitment and perspectives she has brought to the organisation. Thank you, Shirley, and wishing you every success in your next chapter! 👏

As we head into the final stretch of the year, we look forward to building on our momentum, working even more closely across teams, and imagining and creating what tomorrow can be.

Every interaction, conversation and decision a people manager makes has the power to shape an employee's workplace experience. Building these capabilities doesn't happen overnight; it takes intentional learning, practical application and a commitment to continuous growth.

For Shirley Ho, HR Business Partner & Employee and Industrial Relations Manager at Cold Storage Singapore, the programme reinforced an important mindset shift: effective people management isn't just about resolving issues when they arise. It's about creating a workplace where employees feel heard, respected and treated fairly from the very beginning.

Reflecting on the experience, Shirley shared: "It has given me more confidence in advising managers and validating that the approach we're taking is fair and aligned with good employment practices. It's reassuring to have practical frameworks that I can refer to when handling more complex situations.”

Her journey is a reminder that while experience is invaluable, combining it with structured learning equips people managers with the confidence, consistency and practical tools to lead more effectively.

IHRP, together with our partners, including the Food, Drinks and Allied Workers Union (FDAWU) and Singapore Polytechnic, are committed to helping organisations build responsible, future-ready people managers through the People Manager Role Badge pathway.

🔍 Shaping the Future of Job Redesign in Financial Services

How can financial institutions redesign roles to keep pace with a rapidly changing industry? We are bringing together HR professionals, line managers and workforce transformation practitioners for the first of two validation sessions of the Job Redesign Playbook for Financial Institutions, developed by IHRP in collaboration with Institute of Banking and Finance Singapore (IBF) and Skills and Workforce Development Agency (SWDA).

💡 The session gave practitioners an early look at the draft playbook and, more importantly, an opportunity to share their perspectives on what would make the recommendations, tools and frameworks practical and relevant to the industry.
🤝 Through an open exchange of ideas and experiences, participants helped us test the playbook against real-world workforce challenges and identify areas where it could better support financial institutions in redesigning jobs and workflows.

By keeping the sessions small and focused, we are creating space for more meaningful, sector-specific conversations among HR practitioners.

📣 Missed the first session? You can join us for Session 2, exclusively for HR and business practitioners in the financial services sector: https://wkf.ms/4eTMvie (CPD Hours will be accorded for IHRP certified community.)

A big thank you to everyone who took the time to share your insights and contribute to the development of this resource.

Learning to work smarter with AI 🤖

AI is becoming a bigger part of how we work, but sometimes the best way to learn is simply to see what it can do in our day-to-day work.

Recently, Team IHRP came together for a practical learning session on Microsoft Copilot, exploring how we can use AI to save time, work more efficiently and elevate our productivity.

We looked at practical examples from prompting techniques and existing Copilot agents and took this great opportunity to learn from one another, share ideas and see how these tools can be applied to the work we do at IHRP.

For those already using AI, there were new ideas to explore. For those just getting started, it was a chance to see that you don't need to be an AI expert to begin.

At IHRP, we believe learning is also about trying new things, sharing what works and finding better ways to work together.

And sometimes, it starts with simply asking: “How can AI help me add value to my work?”

Singapore’s ongoing conversation on marriage and parenthood offers a timely reflection for HR professionals and employers.

The Marriage and Parenthood Reset Workgroup has highlighted several considerations that shape family decisions today, including the cost of raising children, access to childcare, caregiving responsibilities and the ability to balance work and family life.

We appreciate Minister Indranee Rajah’s recognition of the role workplace culture and norms can play in supporting marriage and parenthood. It is a useful reminder of the role HR professionals can play in helping organisations build workplaces that better support employees at different stages of life.

For HR professionals, this is where good workplace practice can make a meaningful difference.

Family-friendly policies provide an important foundation. Equally important is how these policies are implemented and experienced by employees. Two employees may have the same access to parental leave or flexible work arrangements, yet their experiences can differ depending on how managers and teams put these provisions into practice.

This highlights the value of strong manager capability. Managers are often closest to employees and play an important role in shaping day-to-day experiences. Equipping them with the skills to have constructive conversations, plan workloads effectively and support different working arrangements can help create a more inclusive and supportive workplace.

Leadership also sets an important tone. When leaders demonstrate that professional contribution and family responsibilities can coexist, it can help build a culture where employees feel more confident navigating both.

There is no single approach that will work for every organisation. Different businesses have different operating needs, and effective workplace practices need to take these realities into account. The opportunity for HR is to help organisations find approaches that work for both the business and their people.
