As we celebrate World Environment Day, we are reminded that the cities and communities we design at today will shape the quality of life for generations to come.

For urban planners, environmental sustainability is more than an outcome. It should be a guiding principle that influences how we plan for future growth, protect our natural ecosystems, improve connectivity, and create places where people and nature can thrive together.

MORROW Architects & Planners recently visited the Samwoh Smart Hub, Singapore’s first positive energy industrial building, for a valuable exchange on sustainability, innovation, and the future of infrastructure development.

The visit offered the team deeper insight into how long-term vision, research-driven development, and operational innovation can come together to shape more sustainable built environments. From customised M&E systems tailored to specific operational needs, to the implementation of a data-driven building management system, the Samwoh Smart Hub demonstrated how sustainability is most effective when integrated intentionally into both design and operations.

Beyond the building itself, the session also highlighted Samwoh’s broader evolution as a company. The team’s willingness to continuously adapt, invest in R&D, and respond proactively to future industry demands reflects an important mindset for the built environment sector today.

The visit reinforced the importance of strategic foresight and the value of continuously building technical knowledge and capabilities through R&D, despite high costs and fluctuations in demand. Together, these two qualities empower teams with the necessary skills to tackle the problems of the future, and ensure smoother operational processes and sustainable development.

We would like to thank Samwoh Corporation for the warm hospitality and insightful sharing with our team. As cities and industries continue to evolve, collaborations and knowledge exchanges such as these remain essential in shaping more resilient, sustainable, and future-ready urban environments.

As cities across the Greater Bay Area continue to evolve, the challenge is no longer simply about expansion, but about creating urban systems that are resilient, connected and deeply rooted in place.

The Zhuhai Western City Centre represents ’s approach towards large-scale metropolitan planning: integrating ecology, infrastructure, industry and urban life into one cohesive framework.

Spanning 27 km², the project was envisioned as a new metropolitan gateway for western Zhuhai, supporting the city’s “East–West Twin Cities” strategy while strengthening its role within the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area.

Guided by MORROW’s Intelligent Planning methodology, the masterplan establishes a clear spatial structure that balances economic growth with environmental stewardship and liveability.

Beyond physical development, the Zhuhai Western City Centre reflects a broader planning philosophy, aimed at designing cities which function as integrated systems, where nature, infrastructure, culture and daily life work together as one interconnected urban environment.

At MORROW, we continue to design cities at multiple scales. From regions and metropolitan centres to districts and neighbourhoods, they continue to be grounded in strategic foresight, contextual sensitivity and long-term resilience.

Last evening, MORROW’s Managing Director, Daniel Liu, attended the Design Excellence Awards 2025 Gala Dinner hosted by the Interior Design Confederation Singapore (IDCS).

He accepted the Lifetime Achievement Award on behalf of MORROW’s late Founding Chairman, Dr Liu Thai Ker. Presented by Mdm Halimah Yacob, SUSS Chancellor and former President of Singapore, the award was given to Dr Liu in recognition of his lifelong contributions to Singapore’s built environment and the planning of cities around the world.

As part of her speech, Mdm Halimah shared, “During our nation’s pioneering years, Dr Liu was instrumental in creating and realising the concept of home, for each and every one of us. Few possess such a clear mind, logic and vision, in rolling out a concept of living that we all continue to enjoy today. He taught us that a city is not just a collection of structures, but a sanctuary for its people.”

For decades, Dr Liu dedicated his life to shaping cities that placed people, functionality, sustainability, and long-term resilience at the heart of urban planning and design. His philosophy and values continue to guide all of us at MORROW today.

As we remember and honour his legacy, MORROW remains committed to carrying forward his mission of creating more liveable, sustainable, and culturally grounded cities for future generations.

We would also like to extend our sincere appreciation to Cameron Woo and the organising team at IDCS for the kind invitation, thoughtful arrangements, and continued support.

In dense Asian cities, the surge in demand for digital systems, energy, and pressure on land availability is changing how infrastructure projects are perceived beyond utilitarian technical requirements.

In a recent feature by Future Atlas, MORROW’s Director, Dr Wynn Cam, shared his insights on the intersection between sustainability, infrastructure and urban design, and how they come together to reshape the cities of tomorrow.

Reframing apparent trade-offs between performance and sustainability through a mix of strategies, such as circular systems, thermal energy reuse, and resource-efficient technologies, he explained how infrastructure can contribute to broader decarbonisation goals, while still supporting resilient urban growth. One such example is the exploration of having electrical substations and sophisticated water infrastructure being embedded within urban cores, which allows cities to better maximise every square metre of land.

At MORROW, these ideas continue to shape our approach, empowering us to design cities with intention and purpose. Cities that are not only efficient and future-ready, but also sustainable, liveable and deeply responsive to the environment of today and the future.

“AI is a powerful enabler, but real impact comes from combining it with human judgement, governance, and empathy.”

As cities grow in complexity, the integration of AI and Urban Intelligence into urban systems is no longer optional. It is essential to how we understand, design and sustain our built environment.

At MORROW Architects & Planners, we are committed to continuously deepening our capabilities in this space.

Through recent learning and collaboration alongside industry practitioners and multidisciplinary peers, Senior Associate Kenneth Ng explored how AI can evolve from an existing, isolated tool, to become embedded within urban systems.

A key takeaway from Kenneth is that meaningful urban solutions require deep systems thinking, not quick fixes. Technology alone is not a silver bullet, its true value lies in how it is applied alongside human judgement, governance and design sensitivity.

During the course, his team’s winning capstone project, Flood Watch, did just that, integrating AI-driven frameworks with nature-based strategies, engineering solutions and IoT-enabled monitoring to produce a scalable, user-centric approach to real-time flood management.

The project’s recognition reflects not just the team’s technical capability, but the strength of cross-disciplinary collaboration across multiple industries and expertise.

Looking ahead, MORROW’s team strives to continue to advance its expertise in AI-driven urbanism via meaningful platforms and dialogues for knowledge exchanges, enabling us to shape cities that are not only efficient, but also sustainable, liveable and grounded in the needs of the people.

At MORROW Architects & Planners, our masterplanning work spans multiple scales – from neighbourhoods and new towns, to regions, cities, and constellation cities.

Across the scale, our philosophy remains consistent, allowing the “Family of Cities” urban system to guide each project, rather than forcing individual projects together to define the system.

Within this framework, each scale of urban development plays a distinct role. While a neighbourhood supports daily life and community, a new town establishes balance and identity, and a city integrates infrastructure, economy, and opportunity. At the highest level, a constellation city: an urban clan composed of multiple “families of cities”, connecting multiple city centres into a resilient, interdependent ecosystem, much like a clan formed by many families coming together.

From constellation-scale urban strategies to neighbourhood-level detail and functionality, plans with structural clarity, long-term resilience, and human-centred intent.

Because enduring cities are not collections of projects and ad hoc decisions, but are thoughtfully structured through master plans, which guide coherent growth across generations.
