Today was another heavy downpour across Singapore, with rain coming down so hard that some streets and drains quickly filled with water. 🌧️🇸🇬

But while we humans look for shelter, have you ever wondered what happens to the rats and other rodents living around our cities? 🐀

Do they simply get swept away and drown when the ground floods?

Surprisingly, many have places to escape to. They can retreat into storm drains, sewers, culverts, underground spaces and even parts of buildings and infrastructure. Some are also capable swimmers and can navigate through flooded drainage systems.

Of course, during severe flash floods, not every rat makes it. Fast-moving water can sweep them away, trap them underground or carry them into larger waterways.

So the next time Singapore suddenly turns into a giant water world after a torrential downpour, remember that there is probably an entire hidden ecosystem trying to survive beneath our feet. 👀🌊🐀
