Ota Fine Arts

Ota Fine Arts Ota Fine Arts Ota Fine Arts was established in 1994 in Tokyo. For 20 years, the gallery has defined itself as being a pioneer of Japanese contemporary art.

Since its inception, Ota Fine Arts has promoted various Japanese artists, including internationally acclaimed Yayoi Kusama, and has been expanding the variety of its artists and their works. Ranging from painting to sound and video art, sculpture, installation, performance art and crafts, the gallery represents a variety of highly capable and unique artists. While Ota Fine Arts continues to suppor

t its represented artists, it also strives to provide opportunities to up and coming talents. In September 2012, the gallery opened a new space in Singapore’s vibrant art-complex Gillman Barracks. With this new branch, Ota Fine Arts is hoping to continue forging rich collaborations with new artists from the region. Thus, over the last few years, the primary vision of Ota Fine Arts has evolved from its earlier focus on Japan to an expansion into Asia as a larger and more complex regional whole. The gallery aims to bring more regional character and commonality within the “Asian cultural belt” — a broad area that spans the Middle East to South, Southeast and East Asia — into its programmes. In an effort to represent the manifold regional qualities of this vast belt, the gallery has held exhibitions with Korean, Chinese, Bangladeshi, Indian, Indonesian, Singaporean and Iranian artists. Ota Fine Arts strongly hopes these programmes will convey new aspects, contexts and platforms for contemporary Asian art today.

Presented in our current exhibition "Works on Paper", are pastel drawings by 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚 𝐅𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐫 (b. 1988, Philippines) with scenes derived from her everyday life or from fragments of her memories. Through her visual compositions, Farrar explores the relationship between female self-presentation, materiality, and desire. ⁣

This exhibition is one of the many programmes happening during the Singapore Art Gallery Weekend which takes place from 15 Sep till 1 Oct. This year’s edition promises an immersive experience, inviting visitors to explore the city’s visual landscape. For more information, please click the link below:

Featured in our ongoing exhibition, "Works on Paper", are new drawings by 𝐓𝐚𝐧𝐠 𝐃𝐢𝐱𝐢𝐧 (b. 1982, China) whose surreal imagery of the human body brings about a sense of tension and absurdity. Using ink in contrasting colours of red and blue, Tang illustrates the duality and contradictions found in human behaviour. The works also reflect the artist's social commentary towards the image and concept of the "body".

Come down to the gallery and check out these new drawings by Tang Dixin!

𝐓𝐬𝐮𝐲𝐨𝐬𝐡𝐢 𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐤𝐚𝐝𝐨's (b. 1981, Japan) 𝘤𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘴𝘧𝘢𝘥𝘦𝘴 series of works allude to concepts of time and infinity. Each work has a series of infinite numerals derived from the mathematical constant pi (π) silkscreened in a spiral pattern so intricately that it might not be noticeable at first glance. Upon closer observation, one will also notice that Hisakado deliberately interrupts this infinite spiral with various interventions, such as slicing across the paper or smudging the ink. ⁣

Featured in our current exhibition, “Works on Paper”, are 𝐙𝐚𝐢 𝐊𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠’s (b. 1964, Singapore) new works which explore the relationship between the Orang Laut and the sea. In these works, the prominent use of black ink with blobs of bright reds, the occasional yellows, and floating tendrils, highlights man’s monstrous imagination of the sea and how it can instill both fear and peace within us. ⁣

Featured in our current exhibition, "Constructs", is Chen Wei's ‘As a Wall’ (2022) which depicts folded tables of various shapes and sizes that are arranged to form a makeshift “wall” or partition. Chen noticed that during the Covid-19 lockdown in China, small eateries on the roadside were not allowed to operate, so the unused tables and chairs were folded up and placed on the street as barriers, prohibiting people from passing through certain areas. Over time, people started to become accustomed to such scenes, which is an instance of the reshaping of our urban landscape.

Don't miss out on this last opportunity to view this work along with the rest of our exhibition before it ends next Saturday (22 Jul)!

𝐆𝐮𝐨-𝐋𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐚𝐧 employs a translucent aeronautical fabric in his paintings and installations, effecting light washes of paint reminiscent of bruises, skin, or membrane. Extending his enquiry into modes of abstraction and his exploration of paintings as phenomenological ‘surface-objects’, Tan began to make works that are presented in alternate ways. Shown in this exhibition, 𝟷 & 𝟹 𝘍𝘭𝘢𝘵 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 (2019) is comprised of 4 rectangular paintings that each lay horizontally atop wooden stands, with their painted surfaces facing upwards. Head down to the gallery to view this work - up-close in parts or as a whole, by moving around and between the pieces! ⁣

Presented in our current exhibition “Body”, are paintings by 𝐓𝐚𝐧𝐠 𝐃𝐢𝐱𝐢𝐧 which contain motifs of skulls and human bodies, reflecting his allusions to life and inevitable death. Shown alongside these paintings is a video documentation of his performance piece 𝘈 𝘙𝘰𝘢𝘥 𝘪𝘴 𝘉𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘦𝘥 (2016) in which the artist and 6 other performers make their way towards a gallery space, by stepping on 8 stones which are used in rotation to form a pathway on which they would move forward. Through his works, Tang reinterprets social norms and the relationship our bodies have with it and the surrounding space.⁣

Don’t miss your chance to check out Tang Dixin’s works and the rest of the exhibition before it ends on 6 May!⁣
