The First Western-Style University in Sub-Saharan Africa was built in sierra Leone

Old Fourah Bay College once stood at the center of an idealistic endeavor to create a new and just society out of the awful destruction wrought by the horrors of the transatlantic slave trade. Established in 1827, it was the first university of Western education in sub-Saharan Africa. For a century, Old Fourah Bay College was a laboratory for experimenting with the transfer of western ideas of governance, religion, political organization, and public service bureaucracy.

But when civil war engulfed Sierra Leone from 1991 to 2002, people displaced by fighting flooded into Freetown, the country's capital, looking for shelter and safety, and Old Fourah Bay College was taken over by many families of internally displaced people. During the conflict, the Rebel United Front (RUF), which was one of the most brutal rebel groups fighting the government and peacekeeping forces, laid siege to Freetown, eventually occupying the eastern part of the city where Old Fourah Bay College is located.

Abacha Street Traders Ready And Happy For Relocation.
Recently, market shafts at Abacha Streets were destroyed leaving the traders with no were to trade.
In a bid to ensure that the Abacha street traders do their business in a conducive, secured and healthy environment, The government had today handover the Sewa Ground market complex to contractors as one of the alternative markets to ensure completion within 113 days as scheduled.
According to the Minister of Trade and Industry Dr. Hinga Sandy, the relocation of the street trading along Abacha street to the new site (Sewa ground) is due to environmental and physical planning challenges. This modern Business Park is sighted in the Central Business District (CBD) area of Freetown, and for the first time, this process has today excited traders at Abacha market as many have expressed readiness and support for the move.

Chair lady for Abacha street traders in her statement added that “at first we saw this relocation as against our existence and became angered, but after series of meetings with traders at the said place we now agreed that the said new location would enable us the market women the opportunity to work in a dignified environment. Abacha streets had become overpopulated and taken over by all sorts of negative things, including street trading and lawlessness which we were aware of and there was no alternative to the famous Abacha. We are excited that businesses could be transacted in a more conducive environment.
I want to implore all our members to embrace the project, the complex is made for all even those on the streets. were are excited about the new move.
Also speaking with Mr. Abubakarr S. Jalloh, President of Phone and Allied Products Dealers Association said the new Business Park was their dream. The present Abacha had no room for expansion and the environment is not befitting for doing business anymore.

The Government of Sierra Leone through the Ministry of Internal Affairs has announced decision to cease payment of $25 security services of SECURIPORT for all passengers departing and arriving at the Freetown International Airport, effective 31 August, 2022. This is according to a press release issued on 26 August, 2022 signed the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. “The Ministry of Internal Affairs wishes to inform all inbound and outbound passengers, particularly those using the Freetown International Airport in Lungi, that effective 31 August 2022, the Government of Sierra Leone will cease to pay for the security services of SECURIPORT, and that passengers will meet the cost of the said services,” the statement reads. Accordingly, the Government of Sierra Leone engaged management of SECURIPORT to re-negotiate the cost of their services per passenger. The re-negotiated fee for both inbound and outbound passengers is US$25. The agreed fee will be paid by each passenger through an on-line platform/digital payment system to be developed by SECURIPORT. “To give effect to the above, effective 1st September 2022, all inbound and outbound passengers are required to pay the sum of US$25 at the time of purchasing their air tickets by using either of the following payment facilities: Orange Money, Afrimoney, and online payment platform: www.securipass.sl. Passengers who do not have access to the internet or mobile phone services can execute the transaction over the counter of the following banks: Ecobank,: United Bank for Africa(UBA) and Sierra Leone Commercial Bank(SLCB),” the statement concluded.

As per the Government of the Republic of Sierra Leone guidance, this Securipass platform has been designed to facilitate your security fee payment of $25.00 (362500.00 SLL) (credit/debit card fees not included) to each departing from or arriving passenger to all international airports.
