Civic Center หรืออาคารสาธารณะของเมืองที่รองรับพื้นที่การทำกิจกรรมของคนในเมือง และเป็นตัวเชื่อมต่อทั้งของตัวสถาปัตยกรรมกับเมือง และสถาปัตยกรรมกับคน เป็นโครงการประกวดแบบที่จัดขึ้นโดยมีที่ตั้งเป็นที่ดินสมมติในกรุงเทพมหานคร
ความเป็นกรุงเทพมหานคร หรือความเป็นไทยในความหมายของ Bangkok Middle Ground คือการนำรูปแบบสถาปัตยกรรมไทยมาตีความใหม่ ให้สอดคล้องกับวิถีชีวิตของคนเมืองในยุคปัจจุบัน เพื่อรองรับพฤติกรรมและกิจกรรมของผู้ใช้งานของคนกรุงเทพมหานคร
รูปทรงอาคารเกิดขึ้นจากการนำ Character ของสถาปัตยกรรมไทย ได้แก่ ส่วนโค้งที่ซ้อนอยู่ในตัวสถาปัตยกรรม การย่อมุมที่ทำให้เกิดแสงเงา และสถาปัตยกรรมที่มีปลายยอดแหลมมาใช้ โดยที่ผ่านมา สถาปัตยกรรมเกิดขึ้นจากความเชื่อ ความศรัทธา ทำให้อาคารมีความยิ่งใหญ่ และตั้งสง่าเป็นศูนย์กลาง โดยมีพื้นที่สำหรับคนเป็นลานอยู่โดยรอบ เราจึงนำ Character ดังกล่าวมาใช้ แต่ตีความใหม่ โดยคำนึงถึงผู้ใช้งาน หรือ Human Centric Design เป็นหลัก ด้วยการนำพื้นที่ลานกิจกรรมของคนเข้ามาแทนที่บริเวณใจกลางอาคาร โดยมีผู้ใช้งานเป็นศูนย์กลางแทน และตัวอาคารรายล้อมอยู่รอบนอก
ตัวอาคารจะถูกแบ่งเป็น grid 10 x 10 ช่อง ขนาดช่องละ 9 เมตร มีการดึงมุมของอาคารขึ้นเป็น Tower และกดอีกสองมุมที่เหลือลง เพื่อเป็นบ่อน้ำของโครงการ การออกแบบในลักษณะนี้จะช่วยสร้างการเชื่อมต่อของพื้นที่แต่ละส่วนเข้าหากัน เกิดเป็น Horizontal Connecting Pathways ที่มีแกน 2 แกนเชื่อมพื้นที่จากแต่ละฝั่งมาบรรจบกันที่ใจกลางอาคาร และการลดหลั่น Form ในแต่ละช่อง เกิดเป็น Vertical Connecting Pathways ที่เป็นการเชื่อมต่อพื้นที่ในแนวดิ่งหรือจากระหว่างชั้นของอาคารเข้าหากัน
การเชื่อมต่อตัวสถาปัตยกรรมกับผู้ใช้งาน เมื่อการออกแบบเกิดการเชื่อมต่อระหว่างภายนอกอาคารเอง ระหว่างภายในอาคารเอง และระหว่างภายนอกกับภายในอาคารแล้ว ความลื่นไหลของการเคลื่อนที่จากผู้ใช้งานจึงมีความยืดหยุ่นที่จะรองรับกิจกรรมที่หลากหลายได้ภายในโครงการ เช่น ทางเดิน 2 แกนที่ตัดกันสามารถจัดตลาดนัดที่สองข้างทางของทางเดินได้ตลอดทั้งแนว หรือการจัดนิทรรศการอย่าง Bangkok Design Week ที่คนสามารถแสดงผลงานบน Module สวนหลังคาที่เชื่อมต่อกันทุกชั้น
ในแง่ของพื้นที่สีเขียว โครงการถูกออกแบบให้มีพื้นที่สีเขียวทั้งบริเวณบนดินโดยรอบอาคารเชื่อมต่อเข้ามาบนอาคารในทุก ๆ พื้นที่บน Grid ทุกช่อง เพื่อรองรับเป็นพื้นที่กิจกรรมสาธารณะ Open-air ที่มีความร่มรื่น และเป็นอีกตัวเลือกหนึ่งให้กับผู้คนที่ต้องการออกมาทำกิจกรรมภายนอกอาคาร ทำหน้าที่เป็นทั้งอาคารสาธารณะและสวนสาธารณะให้กับเมือง
คำว่า Middle ground ในความหมายหนึ่ง หมายถึงพื้นที่ตรงกลางระหว่างความคิดหรือมุมมองที่แตกต่างกัน เหตุผลสำคัญที่เลือกใช้ชื่อนี้ เพราะสอดคล้องกับความตั้งใจที่ต้องการให้คนทุกคนในสังคม ที่มีความหลากหลายแตกต่างกัน มาใช้พื้นที่ทำกิจกรรมร่วมกันได้ เช่นเดียวกับรูปแบบสถาปัตยกรรมที่ออกแบบให้มีการเชื่อมต่อระหว่างพื้นที่โดยรอบ โดยมี Bangkok Middle Ground นี้เชื่อมโยงอยู่ตรงกลาง เราจึงต้องการที่จะสร้างอาคารที่ตอบสนองทั้งในเชิงความคิดและในทางกายภาพให้เป็นโครงการที่ออกแบบมาเพื่อรองรับให้กับเมืองอย่างกรุงเทพมหานครจริง ๆ

A civic center is a network of spaces or buildings that cater to the people in each city. Thus a mixed-use activity area is not only the bridge between the architecture and the city, but also a connection between the architecture and the people. This project is a competition held by MQDC, a Thai-based international development company. The location of the site is fictitiously based in Bangkok.
The definition of Bangkok or Thainess varies from one person to another. From our perspective, the Thainess lies within how we interpret the design and integrate local activities into the design we create. Our work is the combination of architectural ideas and spaces that are intertwined with Bangkokrian’s behaviors and activities.
Form and space ideas of our work come from three characters; the hidden curvature of Thai architecture, the recess which gives shade and shadow, and the pointed architecture. In the past, Thai architecture was designed based on religious beliefs. This means that the architecture would elegantly stand in the middle of the area and the people’s space would surround the architecture. Introspectively, we extract its character and redefine our own version of Thainess under the concept of “human-centric design” by bringing the people’s space to the middle of the building instead.
Our building is designed according to the 10x10 modular system with the dimension of 9x9 meters for each module. Two opposite sides of this square are extruded into two towers while the other two sides are pushed down, turning into 2 ponds. This architectural approach creates multiple intertwining paths; horizontal connecting pathways from 4 sides of the building that connect in the middle of the building and vertical connecting pathways that connect spaces from each floor.
The connections between the architecture and users are created upon our design. In which connect spaces between exterior-exterior spaces, interior-interior spaces, and interior-exterior spaces. This gives flexibility to the various functions and activities in which the people can utilize as the building’s flows are all linked together.
We, as Thai people, very much enjoy outdoor markets that provide booths along multiple alleys. This way, activities can occur along the horizontal connecting paths. Art exhibitions like Bangkok Design Week can also be held at connected roof gardens on each layer of the space.
For the green area, it is designed to provide green spaces both on the ground and on the building. Bangkok has been facing pollution and the lack of green public areas for the past decades. We would like to become another choice of public buildings where people can hang out in an environmentally friendly area, full of trees. The people will be able to spend time both outdoors and indoors at this civic building.
“Middle ground” means a mutual area between two or more groups, ideas, or attitudes on some topics. We use this name for the project with the intention that this place can become a place where a diverse group of Thai people with different ideas can come together while the architecture itself serves as a physical space that connects the people and the surroundings. We would like to propose an architecture that represents a concept both ideologically and physically for Bangkok civic center.
