[ See the English version below! ]

From “Saang – Saan” to Creative Placemaking
Maha Sarakham, a province in northeastern Thailand, is shaped by a way of life rooted in community interdependence. People live alongside one another through local commerce, agriculture, and close relationships with forests and nature. At the same time, the province is gradually embracing a more modern urban lifestyle, with spaces and activities that respond to the needs of contemporary living.
In our design approach, we explored this unique coexistence of traditional and contemporary ways of life and translated it into a design concept through patterns, forms, and spatial language that express the identity of Maha Sarakham from multiple perspectives.
Saang – Saan | Reimagining Space through the Local Landscape and Cultural Identity of Mueang Maha Sarakham
• Saang, or Nam Saang, refers to an important community water source in northeastern Thailand. Traditionally, local people worked together to dig these ponds for everyday use. They also serve as habitats and sources of food for a wide variety of animals.
• Saan, refers to the traditional craft of weaving and braiding materials, which has long been part of community life in Maha Sarakham. Local residents creatively transform natural materials found in the area into everyday tools, household objects, and various handicrafts.
These two ideas became the foundation for our design strategies in creating a new creative public space :
🎨 Creating space through physical forms and landforms** that reflect the gently undulating terrain and the local landscape of *Pa B**g – Pa Tham*, a wetland and floodplain ecosystem closely connected to communities living along the waterways. These landscapes also provide habitats for diverse species, including Black-and-orange Flycatchers, mouse-eared bats, snakehead fish, gouramis, and many others.
🎨 Weaving spaces together through planting and landscape elements**, using lines and layers of vegetation to connect different areas, activities, and people. The space is designed to be accessible, comfortable, and safe for people of all genders, ages, and physical abilities. For example, transitional spaces between activities are designed as green areas with large trees and shrubs that provide shade, a sense of coolness, and a pleasant environment for people to pause before continuing to the next activity.
Activity areas are also arranged so that people of different age groups can see and interact with one another, creating a greater sense of safety and reflecting the spirit of the local community, where people naturally look out for one another.
🎨 Creating stories through activities that reflect the community’s way of life, including flexible activity spaces, gardens, walking and jogging paths, and informal seating areas that encourage participation and meaningful social interaction. These spaces can accommodate activities such as informal coffeehouse-style gatherings and community discussions in the garden, while also introducing new opportunities such as handicraft workshops led by younger generations and local markets featuring food, everyday goods, and woven crafts made by senior members of the community.
🎨 Universal design for everyone — creating spaces that support a diverse range of users and activities with comfort, convenience, and safety in mind. This includes designing ramps with sufficient width, appropriate slopes, and adequate landing areas for wheelchair users; selecting slip-resistant and low-glare materials; and ensuring clear visibility in areas where activities may present a higher risk of accidents.
