The staircases in Herzog & de Meuron’s MKM Museum Küppersmühle extension transform vertical circulation into an architectural journey. Carved from raw concrete and nestled within the former silos, these monolithic stairways contrast the light-filled galleries with their heavy, tactile presence. Moving between levels becomes an immersive experience, as the curved silo walls guide visitors upward through narrow yet monumental spaces.

These staircases are more than connectors—they embody the dialogue between the museum’s industrial origins and its contemporary purpose. By embedding the staircases within the existing silos, Herzog & de Meuron preserved the site’s historic essence while giving new life to utilitarian structures.
