A contemporary interpretation of Balinese vernacular architecture.

At Andaz Bali, traditional architectural language is not simply reproduced, but reinterpreted through a contemporary lens.
Pitched pavilion roofs, open colonnades, courtyards and gateways draw from familiar Balinese forms, while simpler lines and restrained detailing give them a new expression.
Gateways and thresholds play an important role throughout the resort. They frame views, mark transitions between spaces and create a gradual sequence of arrival — an idea deeply rooted in traditional Balinese spatial organization.
The result is architecture that feels contemporary, yet remains connected to the forms, proportions and spatial traditions of Bali.

At Tierra Design, we like to think about architecture as more than just buildings.

At Andaz Bali, we wanted to create spaces that let you experience the landscape — watching the light change through the trees, walking in the shade, having dinner on the lawn, or simply enjoying the fresh tropical air from your balcony.

The architecture is also closely connected to its surroundings, drawing from Bali’s history, culture, local materials and the character of the place.

For us, it’s about creating spaces that make you want to slow down, look around and feel connected to where you are.

We recently revisited one of our projects, Andaz Bali, and wanted to share another detail close to our hearts: the game of shadow lace.

When we designed the architecture and landscape, we wanted the built structures and the greenery to feel like part of the same system. We carved geometric lattices into the wooden screens, echoing the tangled overlap of plant leaves and branches overhead. When the tropical sun hits both at once, their patterns merge on the ground, casting shifting, lace-like shadows across heavy stone walls, brick entryways, and walkways.

It’s an ever-changing layer of texture that softens the resort’s solid stone pavilions, letting light and nature do the finishing work.

Hyatt Bali renovation reimagines the resort through
a landscape-led approach inspired by traditional rice terraces.

The project carefully reinterprets existing Balinese elements while introducing new amenities — including a redesigned lobby,
guest facilities, meeting spaces, restaurants,
and the Regency Club.

Gardens, water features, courtyards, colonnades,
and open pavilions are seamlessly integrated with the architecture, forming a cohesive and immersive resort environment.

The result is a balance between preservation and renewal, where the identity of the place is maintained while enhancing the overall guest experience.
