Surrounded by low-rise neighborhoods in a suburban area of Bangkok, the Serpentine Villa is conceived as a contemporary reimagination of the traditional Thai house. Its design challenges conventional form while diligently upholding core principles, such as an elevated ground floor, a central shared terrace, and a steep gabled roof.
The design strongly prioritizes semi-outdoor living, seamlessly blending interior and exterior spaces. To achieve this, the architecture is deliberately segmented into two distinct volumes: a guest wing and a main living wing. These two sections are unified by the central shared terrace, fostering social interaction, daylight, and ventilation for tropical living.
The most defining feature is the winding roof, which acts as a connective tissue, bringing each different volume together. This expansive roof plays a critical functional role by extending to provide abundant shaded areas throughout the house. At the very center of the composition, the roof dramatically unfolds, creating two distinctive, private courtyards that serve as exclusive focal points for each of the two wings.
