From afar, a toy gun will look like a real gun, and when Indonesia’s Finance Minister casually jokes about putting a toll tax on one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, the Malacca Strait, the world does not wait to see whether the barrel is plastic or not.

Purbaya’s remark was a toy gun—not even aimed at anyone, just waved around at the wrong moment. But toy guns still make people cautious. The better signal Indonesia can send is putting the gun down entirely and showing up instead as the country that keeps the sea lanes open, safe, and free. Not out of global pressure, but because it understands what that reliability is worth.

🌏🇹🇼 Young Liberals Unite in Taipei

The 58th General Assembly of the International Federation of Liberal Youth (IFLRY) is taking place in Taipei from 11–14 June 2026, bringing together young liberal leaders from across the globe.

More than an exchange of ideas, this year's Assembly is a demonstration of solidarity and a shared commitment to defending democracy and countering authoritarianism from Ukraine and Taiwan to communities around the world.

The Assembly officially began yesterday with a welcome reception hosted by Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). Participants were welcomed by Hsu Kuo-yung, Secretary-general of DPP and Moritz Kleine-Brockhoff, head of Asia office of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (FNF), alongside opening remarks from IFLRY President Hania Knio, Vice President Yevheniia Fedotova, and Taiwanese legislator Fan Yun.

Together, they welcomed young liberals to Taiwan and set the stage for next three days of dialogue, cooperation, and collective action in support of freedom, democracy, and human rights.

Did you know that democratic values have long been part of Indonesia's cultural traditions?

A gradual yet profound reality emerges when we recognize that democracy is not merely a modern political system, but a practice deeply rooted in Indonesian society. The article explores how democratic principles have been integrated into local customs and community life, reminding us that democracy is embedded within Indonesia’s founding traditions.

Through FNF activities, participants have the opportunity to explore Indonesia’s rich cultural heritage and community practices, gaining a deeper understanding of how democratic values are lived and practiced in everyday life.

The German government’s China strategy was published in July 2023. Among other things, it sets out the objective of reducing critical dependencies on China and mitigating economic risks in relations with the People’s Republic. The sectors mentioned include metals and rare earths, lithium batteries, photovoltaics, and active pharmaceutical ingredients, including antibiotics.

However, a new FNF analysis shows that, contrary to the objectives of the China Strategy, the share of Chinese imports of key goods has risen.
