This is a gift of stories —
lives that have quietly bloomed
beneath your timeless gaze,
in the city of Kobe.

The Japanese who once sailed toward South America,
their chests filled with the scent of hope.
The Jewish families who fled from Lithuania
and found refuge across the ocean.
The Indian pearl seekers are drawn by the whisper of the tide.
The Muslims who have gathered in Japan’s very first mosque.
The Vietnamese who have supported shoemaking.
The Chinese who kept the heartbeat of jazz alive.

Here in Kobe, always —
the old and the new,
the native and the foreign,

For over a year,
artist Navin Rawanchaikul and his daughter listened to these voices,
collecting fragments of memory and faith,
and painting them into a billboard painting and film "Kobewala"
now breathing among the autumn winds of Rokko Meets Art,
until the end of this month.

When you leave this mountain,
you may find yourself remembering —
that your own story, too,
is a part of this vast and tender tapestry
that we call Kobe.

So come.
As the silver pampas grass sways
and the evening sun folds into the horizon,
sip the warmth of chai,

"KOBEWALA"
A community art project by Navin Rawanchaikul
in collaboration with the international community of Kobe

“Kobewala” is the latest project by the Thai artist Navin Rawanchaikul, specially created for the 2025 edition of Rokko Meets Art, an outdoor art festival held annually on Rokko mountain in the city of Kobe, Japan. Coinciding with the 30th anniversary of Rawanchaikul’s studio, Navin Production, this new work – rooted in the community engagement that is integral to his practice – also marks his first collaboration with his daughter.

Throughout the Indian subcontinent, the suffix “-wala” refers to a person involved in some kind of activity, such as a ‘chaiwala’ (a person who sells tea), a ‘dabbawala’ (a lunchbox delivery person) or a ‘rickshawwala’ (a rickshaw driver). The term is also used to name a place after an ethnic group, such as Gujranwala, which is a city in the Pakistani province of Punjab – the hometown of the artist’s family before the partition of India. Combining this suffix and Kobe, “Kobewala” is a response to the artist’s personal roots as well as the city’s multicultural life as one of the major ports in Japan. While diaspora communities from India and South Asian countries are the project’s focal point, the artist has expanded his scope to cover other ethnic groups found in Kobe, including its Brazilian, Vietnamese and Jewish communities. On the other hand, “Kobewala” also explores the journeys of Japanese people who, according to historical record, departed from the port of Kobe to live in other places.

Centred around one of Navin Production’s signature painted billboards, this multifaceted project also includes a documentary film that traces the artist and his daughter’s journey to Kobe, during which they sought out the stories of people and communities across its history. The film is accompanied by a narration, the script of which is based on a letter the artist addressed to the ‘Rokko Mountain Deities’ and is voiced by some of the people featured in the story. Over its one-hour duration, the artist links, through a process of self-reflection, his own experiences to the lives of those he meets. Presented at the observation area on Rokko mountain – which offers a stunning view of Kobe – “Kobewala” will also include an activity area where visitors are invited to create their own ‘-wala’ flags and share their stories. In addition, a unique blend of Chai tea created by the artist’s daughter, Mari Rawanchaikul, will be released with the support by Kobe Spice. This aromatic spiced drink is a symbol of their mixed heritage and Kobe’s multiculturalism.

The launch of the project, due to be held on August 24 from 4pm onwards, will include a community workshop, followed by a film screening and a conversation between the artist and his collaborators.

ナウィン・ラワンチャイクンと神戸の多文化コミュニティが共に創り上げたコミュニティ・アートプロジェクト

「神戸ワーラー」は、タイ人アーティスト、ナウィン・ラワンチャイクンによる最新プロジェクトです。神戸・六甲山で毎年開催される野外アートフェスティバル「六甲ミーツ・アート芸術散歩 2025」への出展作品として、特別に制作されました。
ナウィンのスタジオ「Navin Production（ナウィン・プロダクション）」の設立30周年を記念して発表されるこの作品は、彼が創作活動の中で大切にしてきた「コミュニティとの関わり」に根ざしています。さらに今回は、ナウィンの娘との初の共同制作でもあります。
インドやその周辺地域では、「〇〇ワーラー」という言葉を名詞の語尾につけることで、特定の仕事や役割を担う人を表します。たとえば「チャイワーラー」はお茶売り、「ダッバーワーラー」は弁当配達人、「リクシャーワーラー」はリクシャーの運転手です。また、「ワーラー」は地名にも使われます。たとえば、パキスタンのパンジャーブ州にある「グジャランワーラー」は、ナウィンの家族がインド分離独立以前に暮らしていた場所でもあります。
「神戸ワーラー」という言葉には、アーティスト自身のルーツと、日本有数の港町として多文化が共生する神戸とのつながりが込められています。本プロジェクトは、インドや南アジアから神戸に移住してきた人々のコミュニティに焦点を当てながらも、ブラジル系、ベトナム系、ユダヤ系など、神戸に暮らすさまざまな背景を持つ人々にも目を向けています。さらに、「神戸ワーラー」は、かつて神戸港から世界へと旅立っていった日本人の存在にも言及しています。これは、歴史的な記録にも残されている通りです。
本作は、ナウィン・プロダクションの代表的な表現手法である大型ビルボード（看板）を中心に展開されます。そこに、アーティストとその娘が神戸を訪ね、人々やコミュニティの物語を探した旅を記録したドキュメンタリー映像も加わります。
映像では、「六甲山の神さま」への手紙をもとにしたナレーションが、市民の声によって語られます。55分間にわたるこの映像の中で、ナウィンは自身の経験を振り返りながら、出会った人々の人生と重ね合わせていきます。
神戸の美しい景色を一望できる六甲山の展望エリアで開催されるこの「神戸ワーラー」では、来場者が自分だけの「ワーラーの旗」を作り、それぞれの物語を共有できるワークショップのためのアクティビティエリアも設けられます。さらに、アーティストの娘であるラワンチャイクン茉莉が、神戸スパイスのサポートを受け特別にブレンドしたユニークなチャイティー「神戸ワーラーチャイ」もお披露目されます。スパイスの香り高いこの神戸ワーラーチャイは、アーティストの多様なルーツと神戸の多文化性を象徴しています。

なお、このプロジェクトのオープニングイベントは、8月24日午後4時から開催され、映像作品の上映とワークショップ、アーティストとそのコラボレーターによる対話が行われます。

ขอขอบคุณทุกท่านที่เข้าร่วมกิจกรรมสรุปโครงการ “จากไป กลับมา” ซึ่งได้จัดผ่านไปในวันที่ 16 สิงหาคม ณ วัดอุโมงค์สวนพุทธธรรม ศาสนสถานเก่าแก่ของเชียงใหม่ อันเป็นสถานที่จัดนิทรรศการรำลึกถึงการจากไปของ มณเฑียร บุญมา ซึ่งเปิดแสดงไปตั้งแต่ปลายปี 2563 ในงานได้มีการจัดฉายภาพยนตร์สารคดีขนาดยาว 3 ชั่วโมง เปรียบดั่งบันทึกการเดินทางในการออกตามรอยและพูดคุยกับบุคคลที่เคยใกล้ชิดกับมณเฑียร ในช่วงบ่ายมีการเปิดตัวหนังสือและกิจกรรมเสวนา โดยอาจารย์ประมวล เพ็งจันทร์ ให้เกียรติมาร่วมสะท้อนมุมมองและแลกเปลี่ยนประสบการณ์ ปิดท้ายด้วยปัจฉิมกถา โดยพระอาจารย์ไพศาล วิสาโล

ในวันที่ 17 สิงหาคม ตรงกับวันจากไปของมณเฑียร บุญมา ทางสตูดิโอเคยังได้จัดกิจกรรมเปิดให้เยี่ยมชมสตูดิโอ พร้อมเปิดตัวผลงาน “Black Question (After Montien Boonma)” ซึ่งย้ายมาจากวัดอุโมงค์ หลังเสร็จสิ้นนิทรรศการที่จัดผ่านไป ประติมากรรมรูปทรงอุโมงค์ที่ดูละม้ายกับเนินดินแทรกขึ้นท่ามกลางธรรมชาติ สร้างขึ้นด้วยการขยายขนาดจากผลงานต้นแบบของมณเฑียร “Black Question” (1995, ผลงานสะสมของพิพิธภัณฑ์ศิลปะร่วมสมัยใหม่เอี่ยม) การเข้าไปสัมผัสพื้นที่ภายในของผลงานชิ้นนี้ ถูกขับกล่อมด้วยเสียงเปียโนบรรเลงเพลง “Funeral March” โดยเฟรเดริก ชอแป็ง บทเพลงที่ทำให้มณเฑียรหวนรำลึกถึงภรรยาผู้เป็นที่รัก ด้วยการบันทึกเสียงจากเปียโนหลังเดิมที่ภรรยาของเขาเคยเล่นให้ฟัง ผ่านกระบวนการทำงานศิลปะของนาวิน ลาวัลย์ชัยกุล ในฐานะศิษย์คนหนึ่งของมณเฑียร พื้นที่จินตภาพที่เชื่อมต่อแนวคิดในการสร้างสรรค์ของสองศิลปิน ยังเชื้อเชิญให้ผู้ชมโต้ตอบกับแสงเงาที่เกิดดับอย่างต่อเนื่อง ระหว่างก้าวผ่านกลุ่มคำถามอันว่างเปล่า กระทั่งการเดินทางจบลงที่ปลายอุโมงค์เมื่อพบกับภาพวาดที่ดูคล้ายจิตรกรรมฝาผนังในวัด ด้วยสีเอกรงค์ที่เชื่อมต่ออดีตกับปัจจุบัน ซึ่งประมวลขึ้นจากกระบวนการทำงานของนาวินและทีมงาน ผ่านการค้นคว้าและสนทนากับผู้คนที่รู้จักและเคยผูกพันกับครูผู้ล่วงลับ

อนึ่ง ผลงาน “วิปัสสนา-ภาชนะ” ผลงานเฉพาะพื้นที่ของมณเฑียรที่เคยสร้างขึ้นเมื่อปี 2536 และได้นํากลับมาสร้างขึ้นใหม่อีกครั้งในปี 2563 สำหรับนิทรรศการรําลึกที่ผ่านมา ได้ย้ายไปติดตั้งภายในโรงภาพปริศนาธรรมของวัด ควบคู่ไปกับการจัดแสดงข้อมูลและภาพบันทึกจากนิทรรศการ “จากไป กลับมา” นอกจากนี้ยังมีนิทรรศการภาพถ่ายเกี่ยวกับประวัติวัดอุโมงค์ได้ที่บริเวณลานธรรมเจ้าชื่น ภายในวัดอุโมงค์

กิจกรรมสรุปโครงการ “จากไป กลับมา”
รำลึกถึงการจากไปของ มณเฑียร บุญมา

วัดอุโมงค์ สวนพุทธธรรม เชียงใหม่

นิทรรศการ “จากไป กลับมา” จัดขึ้นในเดือนธันวาคม เมื่อปี 2563 ณ วัดอุโมงค์ วัดป่าเก่าแก่ของจังหวัดเชียงใหม่ เพื่อรำลึกถึงชีวิตและผลงานของมณเฑียร บุญมา ศิลปินรุ่นบุกเบิกผู้มีบทบาทสำคัญในการวางรากฐานให้แก่ศิลปะร่วมสมัยของไทย อีกทั้งยังส่งเสริมให้เกิดศิลปินรุ่นใหม่อีกด้วย ในปี 2543 มณเฑียรจากไป ด้วยวัยเพียง 47 ปี แต่มรดกทางความคิดและผลงานที่เขาทิ้งไว้ ยังคงเป็นแรงกระตุ้นเชิงสร้างสรรค์ที่ส่งต่อมาจนถึงปัจจุบัน

ในวาระครบรอบ 20 ปีของการจากไปของอาจารย์ผู้เป็นแรงบันดาลใจ นาวิน ลาวัลย์ชัยกุล ในฐานะศิษย์และศิลปินผู้สืบทอดการทำงานศิลปะให้สัมพันธ์กับสภาพแวดล้อมและชุมชน จึงริเริ่มนิทรรศการดังกล่าวขึ้นที่เชียงใหม่ โดยเลือกใช้พื้นที่ของวัดอุโมงค์ สถานที่ซึ่งเคยสร้างแรงบันดาลใจให้กับมณเฑียร โครงการนี้ยังได้ร่วมมือกับหอจดหมายเหตุมณเฑียร อเตอลิเยร์ (Montien Atelier) ซึ่งเป็นที่เก็บรักษาผลงานภายใต้การดำเนินงานโดยครอบครัวศิลปิน นำเสนอควบคู่ไปกับนิทรรศการ “กว่าจะเป็นสถูป” (Becoming Stupa) นิทรรศการจัดแสดงผลงานย้อนหลังของศิลปิน จากชุดผลงานสะสมของดีซี คอลเลคชั่น (DC Collection) ผลงานที่รวบรวมมาจัดแสดงและสร้างขึ้นใหม่ในนิทรรศการทั้งสองนี้ คือหลักฐานบ่งชี้ถึงกระบวนการทำงานของศิลปินที่เชื่อมโยงกับสังคมและวิถีท้องถิ่น รวมถึงอิทธิพลจากพุทธศาสนา อันก่อกำเนิดขึ้นระหว่างช่วงเวลาที่เขาพำนักอยู่ในเชียงใหม่

นับตั้งแต่โครงการ “จากไป กลับมา” สิ้นสุดลงในปี 2564 นาวินและทีมงานยังคงสานต่อการบันทึกชีวิตและศิลปะของมณเฑียร ผ่านกระบวนการศึกษาชุดผลงานในนิทรรศการที่จัดขึ้นครั้งนี้ โดยได้ตีพิมพ์หนังสือสองภาษา ซึ่งรวบรวมบทความและสะท้อนมุมมองที่หลากหลาย เพื่อให้เป็นประโยชน์ทางการศึกษาวิจัยในอนาคตต่อไป หนังสือเล่มนี้ยังเชื่อมต่อกับภาพยนตร์สารคดีความยาวกว่า 3 ชั่วโมง สร้างขึ้นจากบันทึกการเดินทางในรูปแบบจดหมายที่นาวินเขียนบอกเล่าถึงครูผู้ล่วงลับ

หนังสือและภาพยนตร์สารคดีดังกล่าวจะนำมาเผยแพร่ในกิจกรรมสรุปโครงการ “จากไป กลับมา” ซึ่งจะจัดขึ้นในวันศุกร์ที่ 16 สิงหาคม 2567 ณ หอสมุดธรรมโฆษณ์ วัดอุโมงค์ เพื่อเป็นการระลึกถึงวันครบรอบการจากไปของมณเฑียร บุญมา ภายในงานจะมีการจัดฉายภาพยนตร์และการเสวนาสะท้อนมุมมอง โดยอาจารย์ประมวล เพ็งจันทร์ ร่วมพูดคุยกับนาวินและผู้ร่วมทำงาน ปิดท้ายด้วยการฉายวิดีทัศน์ธรรมโอวาทโดย พระอาจารย์ไพศาล วิสาโล

อนึ่ง ผลงาน “วิปัสสนา-ภาชนะ” ผลงานเฉพาะพื้นที่ของมณเฑียรที่เคยสร้างในวัดอุโมงค์เมื่อปี 2536 และถูกนำกลับมาสร้างขึ้นใหม่อีกครั้งในปี 2563 จากนิทรรศการรำลึกครั้งที่ผ่านมา ได้ย้ายไปติดตั้งถาวรอยู่ภายในโรงภาพปริศนาธรรม ควบคู่ไปกับการจัดแสดงข้อมูลและภาพบันทึกจากนิทรรศการ “จากไป กลับมา” นอกจากนี้ ผู้เข้าร่วมงานยังสามารถชมนิทรรศการภาพถ่ายเกี่ยวกับประวัติวัดอุโมงค์ได้ที่บริเวณลานธรรมเจ้าชื่น

A Tribute to the Late Montien Boonma

Launched in December 2020 at one of Chiang Mai’s ancient temples, the exhibition Departed < > Revisited was an homage to the life and work of Montien Boonma, a pioneering artist who played a key role in laying strong foundations for the development of contemporary art in Thailand. A devoted teacher, Montien was also instrumental in fostering the emergence of a new generation of young artists. Although he passed away in 2000, at the age of 47, the legacy he left behind, through both his conceptual art practice and his teaching, continues to serve as a creative impulse today.

Marking twenty years since his passing, the Departed < > Revisited project was initiated by a former student of Montien, Navin Rawanchaikul, whose art practice centring on social and community engagements was greatly influenced by his teacher. Realised in collaboration with Montien Atelier, the family-run archive of his work, the commemorative exhibition was held at Wat Umong, an historic forest monastery in Chiang Mai that deeply inspired Montien. The memorial show was presented alongside Becoming Stupa, an exhibition of the late artist’s works drawn from the DC Collection, a private collection and gallery space. Together these exhibitions stood as evidence of how the late artist’s meditative artworks connect to local communities and Buddhist philosophy – traits formed during his time spent living and working in Chiang Mai.

Since Departed < > Revisited finished in 2021, Navin and his collaborators have continued to use the art exhibited as a pathway for sustained reflection upon Montien’s life and work. They have recently completed a bilingual Thai-English publication containing various perspectives and essays, which is intended to serve as an archive and resource for future research and education. The book links thematically to a three-hour documentary film centered around footage captured during the project’s gestation and the narration of a series of letters Navin wrote to Montien.

This book and film will be launched at the closing event for Departed < > Revisited, held at Wat Umong on Friday, August 16th. To mark the anniversary of Montien Boonma’s passing, the one-day event will include a screening of the film and reflections by guest speaker Pramuam Pengchan, followed by a conversation with Navin and his collaborators. The programme will conclude with a screening of a Dhamma speech by the renowned monk Phra Paisal Visalo.

Exploring the temple grounds, visitors can also view Montien’s Vipassana-Vessel, a site-specific installation he created at Wat Umong in 1993. The piece was reconstructed in 2020 and is currently on a permanent display alongside a Departed < > Revisited archive at Wat Umong’s Spiritual Theatre. In addition, a photo exhibition about the history of Wat Umong can be viewed at the Chao Chuan Dhamma Garden.

สิ้นสุดลงแล้วกับมหกรรมศิลปะร่วมสมัยนานาชาติ ไทยแลนด์เบียนนาเล่ เชียงราย สตูดิโอเคขอขอบคุณทุกท่านที่มีส่วนร่วมในการทำงานครั้งนี้

“พลัดถิ่น ดินแดนใคร” คือชุดผลงานต่อเนื่องจากการเดินทางของศิลปิน เริ่มจากการสำรวจประวัติศาสตร์ของเกาะไต้หวัน เชื่อมต่อมาถึงชุมชนชายแดนในเขตภาคเหนือตอนบนของไทย โดยได้สร้างเป็นภาพยนตร์สารคดี 3 ภาคที่เชื่อมต่อกัน ซึ่งตอนล่าสุดที่จัดแสดงในงานครั้งนี้ บอกเล่าถึงความเป็นมาของเมืองเชียงแสน รวมถึงดินแดนโดยรอบที่โยงใยถึงกัน ผ่านเรื่องราวชีวิตผู้คนและชุมชนพลัดถิ่นต่างยุคสมัย เสียงพากย์ในภาษาท้องถิ่นจากหลากหลายผู้คนที่ร่วมเป็นส่วนหนึ่งในการสร้างสรรค์ผลงานชิ้นนี้ เสมือนการปะติดปะต่อบันทึกของชุมชนท้องถิ่น อันสะท้อนถึงรากเหง้าของพวกเขาเอง

ช่วงเวลา 5 เดือนที่ผลงาน “พลัดถิ่น ดินแดนใคร” จัดแสดงบริเวณริมน้ำโขงที่สามเหลี่ยมทองคำ ทางสตูดิโอยังให้ความสำคัญในการจัดกิจกรรมร่วมกับชุมชนในพื้นที่ โดยเฉพาะกลุ่มเยาวชน การทำงานครั้งนี้จะสำเร็จลุล่วงไปไม่ได้ หากขาดการสนับสนุนจากเจ้าบ้านที่ให้การต้อนรับเป็นอย่างดี ในฐานะผู้ไปเยือน ทางสตูดิโอเคหวังว่าผลจากการทำงานครั้งนี้จะเป็นประโยชน์ต่อไป ทั้งต่อตัวชุมชนเองและการขับเคลื่อนบทบาทศิลปะในสังคมร่วมสมัยของไทย

ขอเชิญเข้าร่วมกิจกรรมการศึกษา เรื่อง “พลัดถิ่น…ดินแดนใคร” ปฏิบัติการศิลปะชุมชนของ นาวิน ลาวัลย์ชัยกุล และสตูดิโอเค ภายใต้งานมหกรรมศิลปะร่วมสมัยนานาชาติ ไทยแลนด์เบียนนาเล่ เชียงราย 2023
ร่วมชมภาพยนตร์สารคดี “พลัดถิ่น…ดินแดนใคร” (Once Within Borders) บอกเล่าถึงประสบการณ์ในการออกเดินทางเพื่อศึกษาความเป็นมาของชุมชนพลัดถิ่นกลุ่มต่างๆ ในเขตพื้นที่เชียงแสน ลุ่มน้ำโขง ที่เรียงร้อยเป็นบทบันทึก ความทรงจำ ประสบการณ์ เรื่องเล่าของผู้คนหลากหลายกลุ่ม
และร่วมเสวนาเกี่ยวกับการกระบวนการทำงานของงานชิ้นนี้ ตลอดจนการนำไปสู่การตั้งคำถามปลายเปิดที่ว่า "การพลัดถิ่น" เป็นเช่นไร ดินแดนที่เราได้มาอยู่อาศัยใหม่ ดินแดนเหล่านี้มีจริงหรือไม่ และเป็นของใคร ในขณะที่ทุกคนต่างเป็นคนพลัดถิ่น ศิลปะมีบทบาทและปฎิบัติการอย่างไรในการเชื่อมความแตกต่างของผู้คน และนำพามาพบกัน
โดยมีผู้ร่วมเสวนา คุณนาวิน ลาวัลย์ชัยกุล, อาจารย์ทรงเดช ทิพย์ทอง ศิลปินเชียงราย, คุณอังกฤษ อัจฉริยโสภณ ภัณฑารักษ์มหกรรมศิลปะร่วมสมัยนานาชาติ ไทยแลนด์เบียนนาเล่ เชียงราย 2023 และ ดำเนินรายการโดย รองศาสตราจารย์ ดร. พลวัฒ ประพัฒน์ทอง หัวหน้าพิพิธภัณฑ์อารยธรรมลุ่มน้ำโขง มหาวิทยาลัยแม่ฟ้าหลวง

เกิดที่เชียงใหม่ เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2514 พำนักและทำงานอยู่ที่ฟูกูโอกะและเชียงใหม่
นาวิน ลาวัลย์ชัยกุล สนใจแสวงหาแนวทางเชื่อมโยงศิลปะกับชีวิตประจำวัน ผลงานชิ้นสำคัญของเขาคือ Places of Rebirth (พ.ศ. 2552) ได้รับแรงบันดาลใจจากการเดินทางของศิลปินกลับไปยังบ้านเกิดของครอบครัว เป็นภูมิภาคของอินเดียที่กลายมาเป็นปากีสถานในปี พ.ศ. 2490 เมื่อเขากลับมาประเทศไทย ศิลปินได้สัมภาษณ์ผู้อพยพชาวอินเดียรุ่นพ่อแม่ของเขาซึ่งปัจจุบันอาศัยอยู่ในเชียงใหม่ พยายามที่จะเข้าใจการเดินทางมายังประเทศไทยและขั้นตอนการสร้างบ้านใหม่ที่นั่น เรื่องราวของพวกเขาแสดงให้เห็นว่าโลกาภิวัตน์นำมาซึ่งการเปลี่ยนแปลงอย่างรวดเร็วและต่อเนื่อง สร้างพื้นที่ทางภูมิศาสตร์ใหม่อย่างต่อเนื่อง ส่งผลกระทบต่อผู้คนที่อาศัยอยู่ในสถานที่เหล่านั้นอย่างไร และมักทำให้แนวคิดเรื่องบ้านแยกตัวออกจากตำแหน่งที่แน่นอน งานศิลปะของนาวินมักบรรยายถึงช่วงเวลาวัยเด็กที่ซับซ้อนของเขา ตั้งแต่เติบโตในประเทศไทยและถูกมองว่าเป็นคนนอก ไปจนถึงการทำความเข้าใจกับเชื้อสายอินเดียและใช้เป็นแรงจูงใจในการสร้างสรรค์งานศิลปะ

ทีมงานสตูดิโอเคขอขอบคุณทุกท่านที่ร่วมเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของโครงการ “พลัดถิ่น...ดินแดนใคร” ในมหกรรมศิลปะร่วมสมัยนานาชาติไทยแลนด์เบียนนาเล่ เชียงราย กิจกรรมวันเปิดงานผ่านพ้นไปได้ด้วยดี จากความร่วมมือของชุมชนชาวเชียงแสนทุกท่าน โดยเฉพาะเจ้าบ้านพี่น้องชาวไตจากชุมชนบ้านสบรวกที่ร่วมต้อนรับอย่างอบอุ่น พร้อมการจัดแสดงศิลปะพื้นถิ่น รวมถึงเครือข่ายพิพิธภัณฑ์ชุมชนที่ร่วมนำเสนอนิทรรศการภาพถ่ายเชียงแสนในอดีต ตลอดจนพี่น้องชาวเชียงรายที่ให้การต้อนรับเป็นอย่างดี

สำหรับท่านที่สนใจเข้าชม ผลงานบิวบอร์ดขนาดใหญ่และภาพยนตร์สารคดี ที่บอกเล่าถึงประสบการณ์ในการออกเดินทางเพื่อศึกษาความเป็นมาของชุมชนพลัดถิ่นกลุ่มต่างๆ ในเขตพื้นที่แถบนี้ ยังจัดแสดงต่อเนื่องไปจนถึงวันที่ 30 เมษายน 2567 ณ บริเวณจุดชมวิวสามเหลี่ยมทองคำ

สุดท้ายนี้ขอขอบคุณเจ้าของเพลงประกอบคลิปนี้ “หนุ่มสาวชาวยอง” จากวงดนตรีโฟล์คซองคำยองในตำนานที่ใช้ชื่อคณะว่า “คิง แอนด์ ฮา” สายเลือดสล่าชาวยองจากบ้านป่าถ่อน อีกหนึ่งชุมชนพลัดถิ่นในเชียงแสน อันเป็นแรงบันดาลใจในการเริ่มต้นทำงานครั้งนี้

OK Cinema @ Wonderfruit Music Festival 2023

As an extension of the “Wonder OK” film specially created for Wonderfruit, studiOK presents a series of films that span over a decade of Navin Rawanchaikul’s creative journeys going back to his first celluloid production in Bollywood. Showcasing the art of storytelling, the vignettes include his search for other Navins of the world and their establishment of Navinland. Alongside his family’s storied history, ultimately Navin’s life in art has bridged different communities in lands real and imagined, thus creating his OK Commune. Now festival-goers can immerse themselves in the sights and sounds of his musical oeuvres with a nightly 90-minute looped screening of 10 of the artist's best films.

1. Wonder OK (2022, 17:25 min.)
A lonesome artist and a mysterious box take a winding journey of self-discovery through countries and communities near and far in search of the promised land. A star-studded line-up of performers on the soundtrack includes SUTHEP BAND : คณะสุเทพฯ JuiJuis จุลโหฬาร : Junlaholaan Band and ‘The God of Khene’, Sombat Simla. (Directed by Peasadet Compiranont)

2. Khaek Pai Krai Ma (2019, 16:19 min.)
Featuring tracks ranging from old Bollywood to Hip Hop in style, Navin harks back to his Indo-Thai roots with his band of collaborators to present an audio-visual anthology that lifts the lid on life as part of the Indian diaspora in Thailand. 3. OK Na (2017, 3:17 min.)
Launched at Roppongi Art Night in Tokyo in 2017, this short film’s soundtrack is the artist’s collaboration with Chiang Mai musician JuiJuis. The song OK Na narrates an imagined land where the definition of OK is universally shared. (Produced in collaboration with DDMY STUDIO Co.,Ltd.)

4. Miracle Pha Khao Mar (2016, 6:41 min.)
The follow-up to a 1990’s socio-cultural project that spotlighted the pha khao mar loincloth and its context in Thai life, this film features leading singer Rasmee Isan Soul performing a famous luk thung country song produced specially for the Jim Thompson Farm Tour 2016. (Guest artist: JuiJuis, Produced in collaboration with DDMY STUDIO Co.,Ltd.)

5. OK Island (2016, 7:55 min.)
On a remote island in Japan’s Seto Inland Sea, an artist with a lost soul meets a demon from his dreams who tells him he must find OK Island to break the spell on his life. The artist’s search includes joining with the islanders to build the OK Tower. (Produced in collaboration with DDMY STUDIO Co.,Ltd. for Setouchi Triennale Islands, Art and more...)

6. OK Nakorn (2016, 4:32 min.)
A journey to Songkhla's old town in Thailand’s deep south, taking in the influence of migrants on its cultural heritage and community. Warm welcomes inspire the artist and his travel companion to find the meaning of OK in the charming old town. (Leading singers: Wicha Teddaroon, Navin Rawanchaikul and guest singers from Songkhla community. Produced in collaboration with DDMY STUDIO Co.,Ltd.)

7. Feeling OK (2015, 4:16 min.)
In a lull between creative projects the artist takes time off at his Chiang Mai studio to ruminate on a life in art, reflecting on what it means to be OK, finding contentment in his soul and how the art of storytelling informs the art of living.

8. I’m Not OK (2015, 5:41 min.)
The tale of two sons who are not OK with taking over the family’s fabric store. The youngest, a dreamy artist, returns to his roots to discover the definition of OK from his aging father. Featuring musician Wicha Teddaroon in the first of many collaborations with studiOK. (Produced in collaboration with DDMY STUDIO Co.,Ltd.)

9. Narvin Party (2009, 8:23 min.)
In the last chapter of the Navin Party series, Chairman Navin travels to New Orleans on learning that 90-year-old banjoist (and near-namesake) Narvin Kimball has passed away without having a proper funeral. Hence the Navin Party team joins the late performer’s Preservation Hall Jazz Band to create a fitting memorial to the legendary musician. (In collaboration with Tyler Russell for Prospect New Orleans)

10. Navins of Bollywood (2006, 10:33 min.)
Directed by Narendra Mojidra, the story of the foundation of the Navin Party begins with a letter from an unknown sender asking, “Are you Navin?” The message sends the artist to India’s famous Bollywood where he discovers many other Navins, including a Guru Navin who teaches him salient life-lessons.

“A Letter to Wonderfruit”
An artist’s book by Navin Rawanchaikul

A core storytelling component of “Wonder OK” – Navin Rawanchaikul’s artistic vision for Wonderfruit 2022 – this keepsake travelogue charts his odyssey in the company of a mysterious box to the land of promise, introducing myriad characters from the inspirational communities he encounters along the way. Written in the form of a letter and related over 20 candid chapters of self-discovery, it lifts the lid on his creative milieu and the life conundrums that inform his work.
