Studio Locomotive is a group of diverse talents who approach each project with an interdisciplinary expertise and interests: architecture, interior design, product design, strategic branding, and visual design. Our design director Thanart Chanyu has the honour of being recognised in the Designer of the Year Awards 2025: Emerging Designer Awards / Interior Design.

The Designer of the Year Awards, organized by Decorative Arts, Silpakorn University since 2004, honor outstanding Thai designers in collaboration with the Ministry of Commerce. These prestigious awards aim to elevate Thai design standards to an international level, with awards bestowed by HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn on 11 February 2026 at Sa Pathum Palace.

This Sunday in Phuket, our Design Director, Thanart Chanyu, will join Mr. Jeravej Hongsakul of IDIN Architects and Mr. Padirmkiat Sukkan of Studio Miti for the forward-thinking panel ‘WHAT IF…PHUKET’.

Fran’s Old Town / Frans.thailand

Broken and damaged dinnerware from various restaurants has been carefully sorted and stored in a warehouse for nearly 28 years of her journey in the restaurant business, as told by Khun Pla Atchara Burarak.

Without proper management, these pieces would have ended up in a landfill. Rather than letting these fragments go to waste, they have been given a new purpose within the iberry Group. This initiative was made possible through an awareness of environmental impact and a collaborative effort in selecting our building materials.

At Fran’s Phuket Old Town, within a meaningful re-generation of a Peranakan mansion, 4,378.79 kg of this rescued dinnerware was repurposed and reshaped into circular flooring tiles and counter finishes throughout the restaurant.

This process of re-appreciation breathes new life into both the heritage site and the objects of the past all at once.

จานชามที่แตกเสียหายจากร้านต่างๆ ถูกแยกและสะสมไว้ในโกดังมานานเกือบจะตลอด 28 ปีที่ทำธุรกิจร้านอาหาร จากที่คุณปลา อัจฉราได้เล่าให้ฟัง

จานชามพวกนี้ อาจจะกลายเป็นแค่ landfill ก็ได้ ถ้าไม่ผ่านการบริหารจัดการที่ดีของร้านอาหาร แต่จานชามเหล่านี้ได้กลับมาทำหน้าที่ให้กับร้านของเครือ iberry อีกครั้ง ผ่านการตระหนักถึงปัญหาและการร่วมมือกันในกระบวนการเลือกใช้วัสดุในการก่อสร้าง

ภายในร้าน Fran’s Old Town จานชามที่ไม่ถูกทิ้งไปเหล่านี้ ในปริมาณ 4,378.79 ก.ก. ถูกนำมาแปรสภาพและขึ้นรูปใหม่ เพื่อนำมาใช้เป็นวัสดุปูตกแต่งเต็มพื้นที่ในการ re-generate อาคารเพอรานากันที่มีความหมายในเมืองภูเก็ต รวมถึงเคาน์เตอร์เครื่องดื่มและแคชเชียร์ในร้านหลายจุด เป็นโอกาสที่ดีที่ได้คืนชีวิตให้ทั้งสถานที่และสิ่งของจากอดีตได้ในคราวเดียวกัน

Fran’s Old Town / Frans.thailand

This new branch of Fran’s in Phuket features a glass-addition area that connects the existing kitchen building to the main Peranakan mansion with a covered circulation way. This light-filled seating zone, with its floor-to-ceiling glass panels, transfers the dynamics of social dining and the vibrancy of the open kitchen outward to the neighborhood intersection.

The architecture of this new addition does not need to be an unnecessary replica of the heritage mansion. This approach ensures that the inherent value of the existing heritage structure—with its deep historical importance and place in Phuket’s collective memory—is fully articulated. The design focuses on a thoughtful transition of interior materiality to create a harmonious link between the two generations of architecture. Without imposing a strict sense of "old" or "new," each space holds a beautiful common ground for coexistence, satisfying the contemporary needs of the space while honoring its context and new purpose.

ที่ร้าน Fran’s Phuket Old Town มีพื้นที่ให้บริการที่ขยายออกจากคฤหาสน์เพอรานากัน โดยประโยชน์ของอาคารใหม่ นอกจากจะมีทางเชื่อมหลังคาให้อาหารที่ออกจากอาคารครัวส่งต่อไปที่อาคารคฤหาสน์แล้ว ก็ทำหน้าที่เป็นตัวเลือกโซนที่นั่งที่รับแสงธรรมชาติด้วยแผงกระจกเต็มความสูง และเป็นมุมที่เชื่อมความเคลื่อนไหวระหว่างภายในร้าน ความคึกคักจาก open kitchen ไปยังถนนภายนอกได้ดี

โดยอาคารที่สร้างขึ้นใหม่ ก็ไม่จำเป็นต้องถูกทำในลักษณะถอดแบบซ้ำจากอาคารคฤหาสน์ เพื่อให้คุณค่าของคฤหาสน์ที่ตั้งอยู่เดิม มีประวัติศาสตร์และอยู่ในความทรงจำของเมืองภูเก็ต ถูกบอกเล่าได้อย่างเต็มที่ แต่หาวิธีที่จะค่อยๆถ่ายทอดความรู้สึกจากวัสดุตกแต่งให้อาคารทั้งสองส่วนมีความเชื่อมโยงกันได้ โดยไม่ได้ยัดเยียดด้วยความเก่าหรือความใหม่ เป็นการหาจุดร่วมที่จะอยู่ด้วยกัน เพื่อตอบสนองวัตถุประสงค์การใช้พื้นที่อาคารในปัจจุบัน

This adaptive reuse project integrates Fran’s latest concept, "Brunch & Grill"—an all-day lifestyle brasserie that highlights its cozy, neighborhood-hangout vibe—into Phuket’s landmark Peranakan heritage mansion.

The architectural intervention is intentionally non-invasive and centers on preservation. The original heritage structure, ornaments, residential zoning, and partitions remain entirely intact, honoring the building's time-honored status. Inside, the space has been reimagined with a palette of bright, warm materials to create an inviting, sun-drenched atmosphere. By maintaining a clear distinction between the historic "old" and the contemporary "new," every element is allowed to showcase its own inherent value. The result is a unique spatial experience where Fran’s social dining coexists with the rich history of Phuket.

กระบวนการออกแบบปรับปรุงอาคารเพื่อ adaptive reuse คฤหาสน์เพอรานากันที่ถูกจดจำและเป็นสัญลักษณ์แห่งหนึ่งของภูเก็ต ให้กับแบรนด์ร้านอาหารไลฟ์สไตล์อย่าง Fran’s - Brunch & Grill สาขาภูเก็ต เป็นการหาจุดผสมผสานและคงไว้ถึงความรู้สึกของคุณภาพที่เข้าถึงง่ายของแบรนด์ และการเป็นร้านอาหารเพื่อพบปะสังสรรค์ได้ตั้งแต่มื้อเช้าจนมื้อค่ำ เข้ากับการบูรณะอาคารทางวัฒนธรรมที่มีคุณค่าต่อเมืองมายาวนาน

โดยความตั้งใจคือการให้เกียรติและเก็บรักษาอาคารเก่า โดยปรับปรุงให้กระทบกับส่วนประกอบเดิมให้น้อยที่สุด และเลือกไม่ให้มีการปรับเปลี่ยนองค์ประกอบอาคารเชิงโครงสร้าง ปูนปั้นตกแต่ง ผนังแบ่งห้อง หรือช่องเปิดต่างๆ เพื่อรักษาอาคารไว้ในสภาพสมบูรณ์ที่สุด แต่เลือกใช้วัสดุและโทนสีภายในที่อบอุ่นสว่าง เพื่อสร้างบรรยากาศให้รู้สึกสบายๆขึ้น และรับรู้ได้ถึงแสงธรรมชาติ

ส่วนที่ต่อเติมและตกแต่งใหม่ ถูกแสดงให้เห็นได้ชัดว่าส่วนใดเป็นของเดิมหรือของใหม่ เพื่อให้องค์ประกอบทุกส่วนแสดงคุณค่าของตัวเอง และหาจุดร่วมที่จะส่งเสริมกันและกันในพื้นที่ social dining ของแบรนด์ Fran’s และอยู่ร่วมกับสถาปัตยกรรมทางวัฒนธรรมที่สวยงามของภูเก็ตได้อย่างกลมกล่อม
