!!Strengthening Healthcare in Sierra Leone!!

Imagine a laboratory technician preparing to analyze an emergency blood sample when the power suddenly fails. Refrigerators preserving blood supplies begin to warm, sensitive diagnostic equipment shuts down, and healthcare professionals are forced to wait for electricity to return. Across Sierra Leone, five government hospitals decided to strengthen the already existing renewable energy infrastructure instead of replacing it, creating more resilient energy systems capable of supporting critical healthcare services for years to come.

Through the upgrade of five Government Hospital laboratories located in Bo, Kenema, Lakka, Makeni, and Port Loko, Aptech Africa has delivered nearly 1 MWp of hybrid solar generation capacity supported by more than 3.4 MWh of battery storage.

The unique aspect was the replacement of ageing OPzV lead-acid batteries with modern LiFePO₄ lithium-ion battery technology at Kenema, Lakka, Makeni, and Port Loko. These newer batteries charge faster, require significantly less maintenance, last longer, and operate more efficiently, reducing both maintenance costs and downtime. Bo Hospital retained its existing 1,152 kWh OPzV battery bank, which remained in excellent condition and continued to provide reliable service.

Although installed within five Government Hospitals, the benefits extend to entire districts across Sierra Leone. Thousands of patients who rely on these referral hospitals now benefit from stronger healthcare services supported by dependable renewable energy.

Rather than replacing functioning infrastructure, Aptech Africa modernized and expanded existing systems, preserving valuable assets while introducing lithium battery technology, hybrid controls, real-time monitoring, and improved energy resilience.

!!Powering Better Healthcare Across Zambia!!

Every vaccine tells a story of hope. It represents a child protected from preventable diseases, a mother confident in her family’s future, and a healthcare worker committed to saving lives. Yet behind every successful vaccination is something many people rarely think about - electricity. Vaccines must be stored at carefully controlled temperatures from the moment they are manufactured until they are administered. Even a short power interruption can compromise their effectiveness, placing entire immunization programmes at risk.

Aptech Africa has successfully completed the acquisition, inland transportation, installation, testing, and commissioning of a 100.86 kWp hybrid solar photovoltaic system at a national vaccine Centre with a 122.88 kWh lithium battery storage system, ensuring sufficient backup energy to maintain refrigeration and essential operations whenever solar production decreases or other power sources become unavailable.

The centre supplies vaccines that are distributed to Health Centre IIs, Health Centre IIIs, Health Centre IVs, and hospitals throughout Zambia, ultimately supporting healthcare services for millions of people nationwide.

The benefits of reliable electricity extend far beyond refrigeration. Stable power enables healthcare professionals to perform their work with greater confidence and efficiency, medical equipment operates continuously, and emergency services continue regardless of external power conditions. Renewable energy also lowers greenhouse gas emissions.

Behind every successful vaccination programme is a dependable cold chain. Behind every dependable cold chain is reliable electricity. By delivering this solar system, Aptech Africa has strengthened one of the most important links in Zambia’s healthcare system.

!!Strengthening Border Security with Clean Energy !!

Imagine working at a remote border control point where every passport verification, communication system, surveillance camera, and computer depends on electricity. Now imagine that power suddenly goes out. Border operations slow down, communication is disrupted, security systems become unreliable, and officers are forced to rely on backup generators or wait for power to be restored.

Aptech Africa has successfully designed, supplied, installed, and commissioned five hybrid solar photovoltaic systems at key border control points across Tajikistan. More than 150 government personnel and visitors who use these facilities will benefit from cleaner, more reliable electricity that supports uninterrupted border operations every day.

The installed system is a combined 154kWp hybrid solar power system across five strategically located border control points. Three hybrid solar systems of 26kWp each and two hybrid solar systems of 38kWp each. Each site is supported by a 30kWh lithium battery storage system, providing a total battery storage capacity of 150 kWh across all five locations.

The project delivers significant financial and environmental benefits alongside improved operational reliability. By generating a substantial portion of each facility’s electricity from solar energy, the systems reduce dependence on grid electricity and minimize the need for diesel generators. For government institutions managing public resources, these long-term savings allow operational budgets to be allocated more efficiently while supporting national commitments toward clean energy and environmental responsibility.

!!Bringing Reliable Power Where It Matters Most!!

Healthcare never stops. Babies are born at night. Emergencies happen without warning. Vaccines must remain cold every hour of every day. Recognizing the importance of dependable electricity, Aptech Africa designed and installed 13 solar energy systems capable of delivering uninterrupted power to vaccination centres spread across Uganda.

Twelve health facilities received 12.96 kWp roof-mounted solar systems, while one facility was equipped with an 8.64 kWp ground-mounted system, with each of the larger systems having 33.6 kWh of battery storage, while the ground-mounted installation is supported by a 22.8 kWh battery bank. Using the Deye Solarman Monitoring Portal, Aptech Africa can continuously monitor the performance of each installation in real time to track solar energy production, electricity consumption, and battery State of Charge (SOC).

The installations will benefit the vaccination centres located in: Mparo, Kamwezi, Nyabirongo, Shuuku, Omugo, Rhino Camp, Aboke, Aduku, Kalaki, Nabilatuk, and Karenga. The benefits of reliable electricity extend well beyond vaccine storage. Doctors, nurses and laboratory technicians now have dependable power to operate medical equipment, laboratory instruments, computers, and communication systems.

Reliable healthcare should not come at the expense of rising operational costs. Before these installations, many facilities depended on diesel generators so the new hybrid solar systems reduce generator usage by prioritizing clean solar energy throughout the day.
