COMPANY BACKGROUND

Farm Capital Uganda (FCU) is an agriculture investment financing company which enables

sustainable and profitable agribusinesses ventures with great growth potential across Uganda

to access the finances required from investors and financial institutions, and share the profits

with farmers in return. Access to finance is critical to agricultural and rural transformation in

Uganda but agriculture financing is termed as a “policy orphan” given how rare a policy

framework dedicated to it is and lack of coordination among stakeholders. Finance is a key enabler in developing profitable agriculture value chains and in addressing

issues of community mobilization, cooperatives development, production planning and

management, harvesting, processing and storage, marketing and sourcing logistics. Therefore,

FCU improving financial systems shall increase the efficiency of Uganda’s agriculture value

chains by lowering transaction costs. As such, Farm Capital Uganda (FCU) which aims at

coordinating interventions in development of the finance sector in Uganda is promoting

financing of the agriculture sector through Investors who comprise financial institutions and

private actors to help close the gap in Uganda1. Established in 2016, Farm Capital Uganda (FCU) is an Agriculture Finance Company which

addresses issues in enabling the business environment to result in more finance sustainability

for the agriculture sector in Uganda. Given numerous investment opportunities in Uganda’s

agriculture sector as well as many young people yearning to access long-term credit facilities

with less interest to develop agriculture ventures, FCU will liaise with investment

banks/financial institutions, investors from the urban middle class and Ugandans in the

diaspora to facilitate financing of agriculture value chains. FCU believes that the "access to agriculture finance” is a growing need changing according to

the upcoming risks and market" simply because access to finance especially for young people

and women involved in agriculture and the back bone of Uganda’s economy promotes

economic growth. Unfortunately this access to finance is for the young people who already

Why plant Hybrid Eucalyptus clones?

Hybrids are able to harness the best qualities of both species, so they perform better under a greater variety of challenges.

By selecting individual trees (the best performers) the shape and size will be consistent - when you are dealing with products such as transmission poles, it is extremely important to get a straight, uniform pole to get the best price.
Hybrids also have more resistance to pests and diseases that might attack the trees.
Hybrids can adapt better to a wider range of climatic conditions.
Hybrids can provide higher yields (if planting and maintenance is done adequately)

Nursery practices:

Eucalyptus can be easily propagated from seeds, as well as, through vegetative propagation by cuttings (clonal propagation). On an average, there are about 642,000 viable seeds per kilogram of seed and chaff mix. Dry seeds at 5-8% moisture content, can be stored in air tight containers under refrigerated conditions (3-5 0C) for more than 10 years without losing its viability.
Under nursery conditions, seeds are sown on raised beds under shade. Addition of mycorrhiza innoculum to the nursery soils by adding soil from natural eucalyptus forest is highly beneficial for establishment and growth of the plants. No pre-sowing treatment is required. Rapid and complete germination is achieved under moist, warm (25 - 35 0C) conditions in presence of light. Seedlings are pricked out and transferred to polybags at the second leaf -pair stage i.e. about 6 weeks from sowing. Seedlings are planted out in the field when they reach a height of about 25 cm i.e. about 3-5 months after sowing. This should coincide with the onset of monsoon season.
Plants at nursery stage are highly susceptible to damping off and other fungal diseases, which can be limited by strict attention to hygiene, reducing watering and shade and allowing good ventilation.

About Eucalyptus Hybrid Clones .

A hybrid is a cross between two distinct species. The main eucalypt species we are interested in for Uganda are E. grandis (G), E. camaldulensis (C) and E. urophylla (U). E. grandis is nearly always the mother tree in the hybrid crosses.

Deforestation is a key environmental issue in world. Increased incidence of environment related problems due to deforestation have been observed in terms of loss of biodiversity, cultural integrity and carbon sinks, increased soil erosion, watershed degradation, and coral reef dilatation and degradation.Eucalyptus belongs to the family Myrtaceae with about 300 species of the genus. The species is one of the fastest growing trees in the world and many species attain great heights. Eucalyptus amygdalin is the tallest known tree with specimens attaining a height of as much as 480 feet.Eucalyptus is versatile, fast growing and strongly coppicing tree possessing a wide range of soil and climatic adaptability. E.tereticornis has the most extensive latitude range (9-380S) of any species in the genus. Basically a light demander, the growth of the species is very much reduced under shade. Eucalyptus is known for its drought hardiness, although annual rainfall of 800 mm is preferred. The species is also moderately salt tolerant and relatively fire resistant. Eucalyptus is generally regarded as frost sensitive

Plan the Project
The first step in planning a successful tree-planting
project is putting together a team with leaders who can
focus on the planting.
Make sure your team includes:
• Site partners, including those responsible for
maintenance and those with authority over the land
the project is on.
• People of various ages and backgrounds.
• People with the needed knowledge and skills.
Assigning specific tasks to members of your team will
help spread the workload and avoid burnout among
committee members.

Annual Tree Planting Day Invitation
Join us for our 1th annual event as we continue to contribute trees to the community of kumi starting with mukongoro – this event is brought to you by: plant tree go green Organisation and Global stream aid. Annual Tree Planting Day in mukongoro kumi district Kanyumu County We shall be under the guidance of the nature-guides of kumi forest office, we will give a hand to the foresters of the Agency for Nature and Forest. And provides guide service to those wishing to learn more or contribute to the growth of the go green. The old tress we have conveys an image full of impressive trees but regeneration is absolutely necessary as these trees are becoming very old. We are organizing a casual and fun event to bring together a group of people for a couple of hours to plant trees. The guide service will work with us to educate the good of echo system and how to plant trees. By the end of a few short hours we will contribute more than 10000 trees to the community. (Yes, this is possible!) This event will bring our total to over 50000 trees! And others to help us this event is held rain or shine – so throughout the morning. The preparation includes gathering the trees to be planted, clearing the area and digging the holes – all in preparation before. Please bring boots, gloves and dress warmly! If you are interested in joining us, just let us know! We will and become part of tomorrow’s shades. “Inauguration" of the space and first trees to be planted. Then, we will plant trees until 12noon – each adult on average can plant a-part-of-community-events/ between 10 and 20 trees in this time so you can see how we aim to contribute 10000 trees. Children can participate too and are encouraged at any age (and they can put their name on a label that will be hung on "their" tree). Bring along your family, friends, neighbors and colleagues!!

Best regards

Pine Growing —[email protected] (+256-732408880)

Recommended Trees

Pine and Eucalyptus are the most feasible trees to grow in Uganda. They are relatively high value given the time they take to mature. Pine takes 15-18 years to mature, Eucalyptus 10 years. Other tree species include Mahogany (40 years), Muvule (40 years), Musizi (15 years). Although Musizi takes a relatively short time to grow and is a low maintenance tree, it’s not high value and takes too much space to grow. We’ll focus mainly on Pine growing.

Inputs

One needs land, seedlings, labor, capital. Initial costs include cost of clearing land, buying seedlings, planting seedlings, transportation costs, seedling handling costs. Main monthly running costs include transportation costs to visit farm, security costs to safeguard against tree theft and/or fire. After year 3, maintenance costs for Pine drop significantly. Unlike Eucalyptus that’s susceptible to termites and needs a regular dose of pesticides, Pine can grow without issue in termite infested land. However each tree requires some level of care against pests and disease.

Data

440 seedlings of Pine are recommended on every acre of land.
Each seedling costs about 400/= ($0.15).
Cost of clearing an acre of land is about 150,000/= ($58)
Cost of planting seedlings on an acre is about 50,000/= ($19)

The first 3 years are the most hectic in terms of maintenance costs, making sure the trees get off to a good start. A worker can look after up to 20 acres of land. So to benefit from scale, given that the running costs for 20 acres is about the same as the running costs for a farm less than 20 acres, if you have the land and initial capital to cover planting costs, you may as well do 20 acres.

See Figure 1 for a breakdown of costs and returns assuming a 20 acre tree farm 40km outside of Kampala.

Figure 1: Cost and Return breakdown for Pine Tree Growing in Uganda

Twelve years looks like the meaty part of the curve in terms of annualized returns and time requirement. If you’re a patient investor you could go out to 40 years. There’s not much value add to the price of Pine after 40years.
Given the long time frames required for Pine investments, to help generate some interim cash flows some folks plant both Pine and Eucalyptus. A 7-year Eucalyptus log is worth 40,000/= ($15) while a Pine log is 10,000/- ($4).
The returns from Pine growing look healthy, assuming today’s prices reflect at a minimum the price of pine 10 or so years from now.

Challenges

Long Time Horizon
Hefty Capital Requirement
Easy loss due to fire and theft
Price risk at maturity although this can be hedged away by securing a price contract

Most investments have challenges, the question is, can you handle the pain?

WHAT IS ‘SUSTAINABILITY’?

Most people in the world today have an immediate and intuitive sense of the urgent need to build a sustainable future. They may not be able to provide a precise definition of ’sustainable development’ or ’sustainability’ – indeed, even experts debate that issue – but they clearly sense the danger and the need for informed action. They smell the problem in the air; they taste it in their water; they see it in more congested living spaces and blemished landscapes; they read about it in the newspapers and hear about it on radio and television. The stories that carry the message may be about pollution alerts or the bans on driving and closed beaches that result from them, or about hunger and famine, growing health problems such as asthma and allergies, unsafe drinking water, ’greenhouses gases’ and the threat of global warming and rising ocean levels, the destruction of the world’s forests and the expansion of its deserts, the disappearance of species, the large-scale death of fish and birds caused by oil spills and pollution, or about forest fires, floods, dust storms, droughts and other so-called ’natural’ disasters. Or they may be about many other matters suggesting increasing levels of distress and desperation: inexplicable violence and outbreaks of war, mass migrations, the rise of intolerance and racism, the denial of democratic freedoms, corrupt practices that enrich the few at the expense of the many, rising prices and resource scarcities, growing unemployment and slipping standards of living for many of the world’s inhabitants.v
