So you love Alocasias? But are you ready for one?

One thing I always tell people before they purchase a plant, specifically an Alocasia, is to do your research and examine your space beforehand. These plants are a learning experience, anyone who tells you theyโ€™ve never killed one is full of s**t.

Most Alocasias (commonly found varieties) will mature to be better 2 and 4 feet both tall and wide. They need a good space to sit with plenty of light and airflow, which brings us to our next point-

Unless you have a sunroom or a skylight chances are your natural light inside your home isnโ€™t going to be enough. Invest in a good overhead grow light, or if you have a good place under an existing fixture, you can buy a grow BULB.
We recommend SANSI LED LIGHTING INC.

My preferred method for keeping smaller Alocasias is in a Semi-Hydro substrate, I have some in PON and some in LECA. Both require more care and attention but are much more efficient for their root systems.
As for Alocasias in soil, Grow Queen makes the BEST aroid soil around, you can use our code โ€œGRAF15โ€ at checkout ;)
If you arenโ€™t in the market for a premium pre-made mix, try our under $20 at home mix, iโ€™ll be making another tutorial on that here soon. Keep your babies potted snug, I pot mine 1-2โ€ bigger than the root ball. Only water when your soil is 90% dry, or just below root level. Feed them every watering, even in the winter.

Remember that even if the plant dies, youโ€™re not a failure, that plant didnโ€™t have what it takes to survive in this fast paced environment. Try again, donโ€™t be afraid to ask questions!! And most importantly donโ€™t give up, because I too once thought I couldnโ€™t keep one alive๐Ÿ’šโœจ

My lives solely in Grow Queen aroid soil mix and fed only their plant food. This is your sign that you donโ€™t necessarily need Kokodama for your Anthuriums!

Tonight I came across a post that made me both a little sad and giggle at the same time.

A woman ordered a plant from a large, reputable online nurseryโ€ฆ

Now, Iโ€™m going to stop right there and emphasize the word LARGE.

As plant people, we know that no two plants are ever going to look exactly the same. Different colors, different variegation, different growth patterns, different curvature, theyโ€™re all unique.

So when we order from a company that grows large quantities of the same plant, we have to understand that the plant we receive is very likely going to look different from the plant pictured in the listing.

And this is something thatโ€™s really important to remember when purchasing from larger companies versus personal sellers.

Iโ€™m not knocking either one! I love a good Orange Lake sale just as much as I love finding a good Marketplace deal.

But unless the listing specifically says โ€œthe plant pictured is the exact plant you will receive,โ€ there is always going to be variation.

And letโ€™s be honestโ€ฆ that website photo was probably taken under perfect lighting, in perfect greenhouse conditions, with the plant positioned to show off its best side.

Soโ€ฆ

Did she receive the plant she ordered? Yes.
Was it the exact plant pictured? No.
Can the plant she received eventually look more like the listing photo? Absolutely!
Was it worth bashing a great company over a few leaves having less variegation? In my opinion, no.

This is your friendly reminder that YOU are in control of your purchases.

Read the descriptions.
Read the refund/return policies.
Look at what youโ€™re actually agreeing to purchase.
And understand the difference between buying an individual plant from a personal seller and buying from a company producing hundreds or thousands of the same plant.

If you absolutely want the exact plant pictured, look for sellers who specifically sell individual plants and clearly state that the plant pictured is the plant youโ€™ll receive.

Orโ€ฆ try Palmstreet

At the end of the day, plants are living things. They grow, they change, and sometimes they surprise us.

And honestly? Thatโ€™s part of the fun.

Iโ€™m gonna be really real with yall for a second-

Life has been kicking my absolute ass lately, and iโ€™ve been struggling to find the motivation to keep going.

Then yesterday during my daily-depressive-walk-around my house, I noticed this Syngonium. I bought her from HD in April I believe, she had spider mites so horribly bad but she was on sale and on my wishlist so I took a chance. For 2-3 months she didnโ€™t do anything, no new growth, no root progression, nothing. I just kept taking care of her.
I pulled her down to water yesterday and saw not one, not two, but three new leaves.

So to sum it up, this is why itโ€™s important to keep trying, to keep pushing through the hard s**t. You canโ€™t fail something you refuse to give up on.
