Your plumbing system deserves just as much attention as your furnace or roof before the cold weather arrives. A little preparation now can help you avoid frozen pipes, leaks, and costly water damage once temperatures drop.
Here are a few key things to check:
⚪ Insulate exposed pipes. Pipes in unheated areas like crawl spaces, garages, attics, or exterior walls are especially vulnerable to freezing. Reach out if we can be of help!
⚪ Disconnect and drain outdoor hoses and spigots. Trapped water in garden hoses and exterior faucets can freeze and expand, leading to cracks or leaks.
⚪ Check for hidden leaks. Inspect under sinks, around toilets, and near your water heater for moisture, corrosion, or staining. A quick way to check for hidden leaks is to turn off all your fixtures and see if your water meter is still moving.
⚪ Flush and service your water heater. Flushing the tank to remove sediment and checking that the temperature is set safely can help it run efficiently during a high-demand season. Give us a call if you would like us to perform this service.
⚪ Test your sump pump. Pour a bucket of water into the basin to confirm it activates and drains properly, and
give us a call if you haven’t scheduled your annual maintenance visit. A sump pump that fails during winter weather can lead to serious flooding.
⚪ Know your shutoff valve. Every homeowner should know where their main water shutoff valve is located and how to use it. In the event of a burst pipe, acting quickly can prevent significant damage.
⚪ Consider a service agreement ahead of a high-use season. If you don’t already have one, explore a service agreement, which can lead to cost savings, priority scheduling, improved longevity, and simpler upkeep for your plumbing system.
