With yesterday's flooding as a result of the heavy rains, numerous places suffered damages and are now looking at the clean up process. Here at SERVPRO we offer clean up services for homes and businesses. I want to share some tips for those involved.
Much of these damages will not be covered under your usual homeowners and business owners policies. The National Flood Insurance Program, which is now run by FEMA, offers a flood insurance policy for virtually anybody. Go to NFIP Direct or your insurance agent for more information.
Some "Do's" and "Don'ts" about flood water. Flood water is contaminated water and often contains sewage.
Do's: Avoid contact with flood water and items contaminated by flood water if possible. Use protection such as gloves, boots, and even masks when handling affected items. Wash your hands after handling affected items.
Contact your insurance agent and ask about the potential of coverage. Some policies may have coverage depending the source of the water and how it entered your home or business.
Contact a remediation company early to discuss your situation and a scope of work for your property. There is often hidden damage which will become apparent later along with health concerns later.
Some "Don'ts: Don't spread the contaminated water by walking unnecessarily on damaged or wet areas.
Don't turn on your HVAC if there is a possibility of spreading contaminated air throughout your home.
Don't use TV's or other appliances while standing on wet carpets or floors, especially not on wet concrete floors.
Don't enter rooms with standing water where electrical shock hazards may exist, such as extension cords or power strips on the floor.
