The Prairie's Golden Lantern a.k.a. Prairie Coneflower (Ratibida pinnata)

Long before roads, trains, and horse-drawn carriages, vast prairies covered Georgia and other states. There stood a tall golden flower, its petals drooping gracefully beneath a dark central cone like a lantern glowing above the prairie.

Ratibida pinnata, commonly called Prairie Coneflower, was part of the native landscapes that many Indigenous peoples lived alongside for centuries.

This plant was a familiar member of the prairie community—a landscape that provided food, medicine, shelter, and spiritual connection.

As the summer heat intensifies, Prairie Coneflower keeps its head high, typically reaching 4-5 ft. Deep roots means this lady can withstand drought and dry spells once established. Native bees and butterflies feed on its blooms, whilr Goldfinches later feast on its seeds.

When you plant Prairie Coneflower, you're planting more than a flower. You're restoring a tiny piece of an ancient ecosystem. Its cheerful golden blooms dance in the breeze just as they did hundreds of years ago, supporting pollinators, feeding birds, and bringing a touch of wild prairie magic to modern gardens.

This is life y'all. This is what makes me happy. My youngest catching fireflies just like I did when I was a kid. The amazement, the gentleness, the joy, and wonder. ...it doesn't get much better than this. 🤗

Rainy days = happy days here! 🤗 These were taken right before the storm hit. Goldfinches munching happily on Anise Hyssop seeds, the beautyberry bushes and buttonbushes are AMAZING right now! We only have 5 of each of those shrubs left, so come get em! 🤗

Y'all, I love moments like this. Sittin' on the back porch, listening to the rain falling softly all around, and then....I see Garfield perk up from his slumber.

Our trash pandas are emptying out the bird feeder once again. 😂

I've learned that they can't seem to figure out how to empty the left one, so I can keep that one full. The right one, they get all the time, so now, I only fill it a few inches. Most of the time, it's gone by dusk...but sometimes, like tonight, there's a smidge left.

Little E is mesmorized by our trash pandas as well. He has a heartful of love and empathy for animals and nature. I hope he keeps it all his life. ☺️☺️☺️
