5 Steps to Lawn Perfection
#5 Mowing
During the spring and summer months in Georgia, it is typical to need to mow your lawn at least once a week. Mowing your grass often is okay during this the warm seasons, just be sure to follow the standard lawn care ‘rule of thumb’ when it comes to mowing: Do not cut more than ⅓ of the total grass height per mowing. If you are concerned about mowing heights for your type of turf, use this handy grass mowing height guide from Today’s Homeowner.
#4 Keep Mower Blades Sharp
A well maintained lawn can only happen if you use well-maintained lawn equipment too! Sharpening your lawn mower blades is a very important thing to remember, as dull mower blades can shred the top level of your turf. This can lead to a lawn covered in brown-edged blades of grass, which looks bad and can also leave your yard open to lawn diseases.
#3 Fertilizer
Do not disregard the benefits of fertilizer. Often times it is needed to add nutrients (like nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium) back into your yard, as various scenarios can deplete your yard of these. Typically July and August are not times to fertilize; however, in early fall (around Sept. – Oct.) whenever the weather becomes cool, is the next time to fertilize your lawn. Doing this after summer greatly helps to replenish the nutrients into lawns that have gone through summer stress (i.e. excessive heat, drought, etc.).
#2 Water!
Make sure you are watering your lawn properly by doing so in the early morning or late in the evening. Also, water infrequently and deeply, meaning water for a long period of time with a sprinkler or soaker hose (30-45 minutes) twice a week, instead of for a few minutes everyday. Deep watering is more beneficial and will encourage a healthier root system. Be sure you are aware of local water restrictions (days/times) before setting up your sprinkler!
