If your foundation needs piers, someone will ask you to choose: steel or concrete.
Both transfer the weight of your house to stable ground. The difference is how deep they go. Oklahoma's clay moves seasonally down to 10 or 15 feet. Steel piers reach 20 to 30. Most concrete pilings stop at 8 to 12.
A pier that ends inside the active clay zone is standing on ground that moves twice a year.
