We’re proud to celebrate Tim Sterling, a valued member of our team. Tim graduated from Adrian High School in 1996 and went on to earn his degree in Horticulture from Michigan State University in 2000. As a licensed Commercial Pesticide Applicator, he brings both expertise and dedication to every project, helping us deliver quality results for our clients.

Outside of work, Tim enjoys spending time with his family and cheering on the Detroit Tigers. He has a son attending Baker College and a loyal Labrador retriever named Oakley, who always keeps things lively at home. And if you’re at Comerica Park, don’t be surprised if you spot Tim in the stands, rooting for the Tigers!

Labor Day is a time to honor the contributions of hardworking men and women across the country whose dedication builds stronger communities and brighter futures. It’s a day to pause, reflect, and celebrate the value of work and the people behind it.

At Smith’s, we are proud to recognize our incredible team—the heart and hands behind every project. From early mornings in the summer sun to long winter hours clearing snow, their skill, perseverance, and pride keep our community moving and thriving all year long.

Meet Nathan (Nate) Graf — our go-to Irrigation Specialist at Smith’s Nursery! 🌱💧 From installing new systems to fine-tuning every sprinkler head, Nate makes sure your landscape gets the perfect drink every time.

Fun facts!
Nathan is a great husband and someone who would do anything for anybody. He might seem quiet at first, but once you get to know him, you’ll see he’s super outgoing. He loves side-by-siding, being outdoors, and feels most at home in the gym. A true car enthusiast, he’s especially fond of Mustangs (and really, anything with four wheels). Above all, Nathan loves his family, friends, and making the most out of every adventure. 🚜🏞️💪

Employee Spotlight!

Meet Joel Baker, our Lawn Mowing Foreman, who has been part of the Smith’s Nursery family for over 20 years! Joel is the kind of person who shows up every day ready to work hard and take pride in keeping our clients’ lawns looking their best.

But when the workday ends, Joel has an even more important job—being “Dad” to his cat, Dufus. Like clockwork, around 5 p.m., Dufus parks himself by the door, waiting for Joel to come home. After dinner—no matter how long the day was or how tired he might be—Joel grabs the leash and takes Dufus for his evening walk around the yard. It’s a small daily ritual that says a lot about the kind of person Joel is: dedicated, dependable, and full of heart.

We’re lucky to have Joel leading our mowing crew—and Dufus is pretty lucky too. 🐾

A Backyard Transformation—Years in the Making

When you run a family business, your own projects always seem to be the ones that get pushed to the bottom of the list. For years, we’ve been dreaming about transforming our own backyard—but just like many of our customers, we had to take it one phase at a time.

This remodel didn’t happen overnight. It was a labor of love, built slowly around the original home that Eric’s great-grandfather built generations ago. We wanted to honor the past while creating a space we could enjoy today.

Meet Gina Zonca – Office Manager at Smith’s Nursery & Landscaping

Gina joined us in November 2024 and has been a huge asset to the team ever since. She grew up in Onsted and has lived in Adrian most of her adult life. Before coming to Smith’s, she helped run her family’s drywall business for 10 years—so working in a family-owned company felt like a natural fit.

As Office Manager, Gina takes care of just about everything behind the scenes—answering phones, handling payroll, managing payables and receivables, and keeping the office running smoothly.

She and her husband, Shawn, got married in September 2023 and have a blended family of five kids—Gina has three daughters and Shawn has two sons.

If you’ve called or stopped in recently, you’ve probably already had the pleasure of talking with her. We’re lucky to have her on our team!

Meet the Boss Man!

Eric Smith – Owner of Smith’s Nursery and Landscaping

Eric Smith has been part of Smith’s Nursery and Landscaping for as long as he can remember—literally. As the great-grandson of founder Cliff Smith, Sr., Eric grew up right on the nursery grounds, helping out from a young age and soaking up everything he could about the family business.

He started working part-time when he was just 12 years old and went full-time by 19. Now 48, Eric has over three decades of experience and has officially taken over as owner, continuing the legacy started four generations ago.

Smith’s Nursery and Landscaping has been serving the community for more than 67 years, and under Eric’s leadership, it continues to grow. In addition to landscaping, the business now offers hardscaping (like patios, walkways, retaining walls, and water features), pest control, structural spraying, pond treatments, irrigation services—and most recently, full construction work, including porch rebuilds, outdoor kitchens, and custom basement renovations.

Eric takes pride in staying hands-on and delivering the kind of quality work the Smith name has stood for since day one. He’s excited to keep building on that legacy and to serve the community for many more years to come.
