For years of enjoyment, please warm the pot up with the oven before cooking, and never place it in a hot oven after being in the refrigerator. Chris Pettingill and Peggi Sue Peters met in 1984 while attending Harford Community College in Bel Air, Maryland and went on to receive their B.F.A. degrees at the New York State School of Ceramics at Alfred University. Chris continued on to study at the Un

iversity of The Arts, in Philadelphia, and received his M.F.A. in ceramic art from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana in 1992. They now live and work along the banks of the Susquehanna River in Afton, NY. In 1995 they started their studio in an old church in Delta, PA and set about to make functional pots on the potter’s wheel. “Since my background is in ceramic sculpture, we baked and cooked and ate and drank from everything we made for about a year before even trying to sell a single pot because we wanted to make sure they worked properly and were sturdy enough for everyday use.” They settled on white stoneware and porcelain clays for their work, and are glaze fired to Cone 10 (2350 degrees F.) in electric kilns with glaze made from nontoxic materials. “We formulate and make all of our own glazes from raw materials in our studio, to be sure that they are safe not only for people to use, but for us to work with as well.”

Chris and Peggi Sue have conducted workshops at the University of South Carolina, Augusta State University, Goucher College, and for various local elementary and high schools. Their work is in use and in private collections across the United States and around the world.

Super sweet Spiral Platter for . Another from the “tornado kiln”. This little buck has been feasting on crabapples for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Robins and Cedar Waxwings have just about stripped the Mountain Ash trees of berries. Kinda wild to witness the feeding frenzy. 😃

Get home from our market yesterday, did a little glazing, started loading the kiln to make some space to glaze bigger pieces for next weekend. Fill the kiln, decide to let the computer fire it overnight. Wake up before the sun, grab a cup of coffee, get dressed, put shoes on, walk across the yard to the studio and check on the firing. One minute before the kiln finishes and shuts off. Almost like I know what I’m doing, eh?… 🤪🔥

Cream & Sugar sets for . Fresh from the “tornado kiln” the other night. While it was a wild storm, we never lost power and the firing came out beautiful. Losing power at the end of a firing is a problem that usually results in all the work being scrapped. To have every single piece turn out amazing is a blessing. 😎

Once again firing kilns for Colorscape in a tornado watch. Relieved, the kiln reached temperature and shut off mere seconds after the wind and biblical deluge began. Wisely took an umbrella for the walk back to the house. Wind picked up, slipped and fell on the wet grass, and got instantly soaked to the bone. Sorry, no pictures… lol 😝

Getting a handle on Monday. Got another dozen waiting, but there’s glazing, and trimming, and making to do. It’s going to be a perfect afternoon for mowing too. Some days I need to be more than one person. Spongeschool starts tomorrow. Gotta find time to prepare for that and the string of emails from students. My advice, come to class before you start to worry… 🤔😉🤣
