A group of 6,000 young American elms in Vermont were injected with Dutch elm disease spores to test their resistance to the disease.

Summer is almost over and the trees that are the most stressed are starting to show signs:

- pay attention to early fall color
- early leaf drop
- uneven color. Particularly one side or from the top down

🍁 Seeing yellow ‘Red Sunset’ maples everywhere right now?

Red maples (Acer rubrum) prefer acidic soils. In our higher-pH Northeast Ohio landscapes, manganese can become unavailable to the tree—even when there’s plenty of it in the soil.

The classic symptom is interveinal chlorosis: yellow leaf tissue with greener veins. In more severe cases, like this one, the affected tissue can progress from yellowing to necrosis—actual death of the leaf tissue.

July and August often make these problems especially visible as heat, moisture stress, and a full canopy increase demands on an already stressed root system.

🌳 Yellow leaves aren’t always asking for fertilizer. Sometimes they’re telling us about the soil.
