We’ve lost elms. We’ve lost ash. Now beech trees are facing a serious threat.

Beech Leaf Disease is spreading across Ohio and affecting both native and ornamental beech trees. Learning the symptoms and acting early may help preserve valuable trees.

Over the last two weeks, we've been seeing a significant increase in Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) activity across Northeast Ohio.

Those small white, cotton-like masses on the undersides of hemlock branches may not look like much, but this invasive insect has changed entire forest ecosystems throughout the Appalachian Mountains.

In areas of the southern Appalachians, HWA has caused widespread decline and mortality of eastern hemlock populations. Without management, infested trees often decline and die within 5–10 years. Hemlocks are more than just landscape trees—they are a foundation species that create cool, shaded habitats for wildlife, protect stream temperatures, stabilize soils, and help define the character of forests throughout the eastern United States.

If you've ever hiked in the Smokies, the Blue Ridge, or other Appalachian forests, you've likely seen the impact firsthand: dead gray hemlocks standing where dense evergreen canopies once moderated temperature, moisture, and habitat conditions. Researchers have documented extensive hemlock mortality and major ecological changes in affected forests.

What to look for:
• White cotton-like masses at the base of needles
• Thinning foliage
• Needle loss
• Branch dieback
• General decline in tree vigor

Early detection is critical. The sooner an infestation is identified, the more management options are available.

For Ohio residents, the Ohio Department of Agriculture has an excellent resource for identification and management information:

If you're noticing symptoms on hemlocks in your landscape or woodland, consider having them evaluated before significant decline occurs.

I don’t see these very often in Ohio but I have come across two this month. The good looking ones are being intensively managed to prevent/control blight.

The point is, people often want to add something ‘unique’ to their gardens. Truth: if not many people have it there is likely a good reason why. Don’t fall into that trap as you are expanding your gardens this spring.

Contorted filbert is an ornamental cultivar of European Filbert, (Corylus avellana 'Contorta'), grown for its twisted, gnarly stems. The plant is also sold under the name Harry Lauder's Walking Stick. While it’s unique architecture can be impressive, it’s highly susceptible to a fungal canker th...
