🍂 Before the Oregon rain arrives, make sure your RV is ready.

Did you know that many of the expensive roof repairs we see start with something as small as a tiny crack in the sealant around a vent, skylight, or air conditioner? Most owners never notice it until water has already found its way inside.

The good news? Most of these problems are completely preventable with routine roof maintenance.

That’s why throughout September, we’re offering our Roof Preventative Maintenance Special!

✅ Complete Roof Inspection
✅ Professional Roof Cleaning
✅ Inspect All Roof Seams & Penetrations
✅ Sealant Inspection & Minor Touch-Ups*

The Wilderness Rebuild – Part 3

This stage is all about getting the roof sealed up and weather-tight. I’m installing a brand-new MaxxAir fan along with a new rooftop A/C to be installed soon, bringing this 1976 Wilderness one step closer to becoming a comfortable off-grid adventure trailer.

I also want to give a huge thank you to Panther RV Products for helping support this project. They’ve been my primary supplier throughout this rebuild, and they’ve been great to work with. If you’re looking for RV parts, accessories, or upgrade components, I highly recommend checking them out. Their support has helped make this project possible, and I’m excited to continue showcasing the products going into this build.

There’s still plenty of work ahead, but it’s finally starting to look like a camper again. Stay tuned for Part 4!

One thing I’ve learned working on RVs is that if you want a project to last, you can’t build over hidden problems.

As I started pulling up the floor, I found exactly what I expected on a trailer that’s nearly 50 years old—rotted framing from years of water intrusion.

Now, I could’ve covered it up and nobody would’ve known. But that’s not how I build things.

So every piece of damaged wood is coming out, and it’s getting rebuilt the right way from the ground up. It’s definitely more work than I planned on, but this is the foundation for everything that’s coming next.

Good bones make a good trailer, and that’s exactly what we’re building.

Next up, we’ll keep bringing this old Wilderness back to life.

The Wilderness Rebuild begins…

A little while back, I was wrapping up a service call for a customer when I noticed an old 1976 Wilderness travel trailer tucked away on his property. It had been sitting for years, was completely gutted, and most people would’ve written it off as scrap.

After talking with him, he ended up giving it to me for a great price, with one condition… get it off his property.

So that’s exactly what I did.

Since then, I’ve been spending my evenings and spare time tearing into it. What I thought would be a fairly straightforward project quickly turned into replacing a lot of rotten framing and rebuilding the structure from the ground up. It’s been a lot more work than I expected, but that’s all part of bringing a nearly 50-year-old trailer back to life.

The goal isn’t to build another cookie-cutter camper. This is going to become a purpose-built off-grid adventure trailer—a modern take on a classic 1976 Wilderness. It’ll feature solar power, lithium batteries, an inverter, air conditioning, a diesel heater, a compact half bath, and a simple, functional layout designed around how I actually camp and travel.

I’ve been so focused on the build that I haven’t recorded nearly as much video as I intended, but I have been taking a lot of photos along the way. Going forward, I’ll be sharing more of the process, the challenges, the products I’m using, and hopefully a few tips for anyone tackling their own restoration.

Welcome to The Wilderness Rebuild. I’m excited to finally bring you all along for the ride.

Stay tuned… there’s still a lot of work ahead.

It’s been a little quiet on our page lately… but that’s only because we’ve been incredibly busy!

Over the last several weeks we’ve been traveling all over Oregon helping RV owners get ready for summer adventures. Every RV is different, and that’s one of the things I enjoy most—no two days are ever the same.

Here’s just a glimpse of some of the projects we’ve completed recently:

🔋 Upgraded lead-acid battery banks to lithium systems
🧰 Generator maintenance and service
🏕️ Roof cleaning, inspections, and preventative resealing
🚛 Trailer coupler replacements to keep customers towing safely
🏠 Interior flooring upgrades
🪑 Custom dinette and booth modifications
🔧 General maintenance, repairs, and troubleshooting

One thing I’ve learned over the years is that preventative maintenance is almost always less expensive than emergency repairs. Whether it’s a roof inspection before the rainy season, servicing your generator before a trip, or replacing worn components before they fail, a little maintenance can save a vacation.

To everyone who has trusted D&S Custom Conversions with your RV—thank you. Your referrals and support have kept me on the road and doing what I love.

If your RV needs repairs, upgrades, or maintenance, I’d be happy to see how I can help.

Freedom to Roam. Crafted to Last.

⚠️ This Could Have Been Much Worse…

I passed this motorhome stranded on the side of the highway and decided to turn around and check on them.

What started as a tire blowout turned into a major failure:
Entry steps torn up
Hydraulic lines damaged (leveling + slides)
Diesel filler neck ripped out
Extensive side damage, both inside and outside.
And that’s just what we could see.

The scary part?
This was preventable.
The remaining tires:
~5/32 tread
~6 years old
~40,000+ miles
That’s right in the danger zone for RV tires—especially under heavy loads at highway speeds.

👉 RV tires don’t fail the same way car tires do.
They age out before they wear out.

Thankfully, the driver kept control and got safely to the shoulder. That doesn’t always end that way—especially with families on board.

Here’s the takeaway:
If you own an RV, you should be doing at least an annual inspection that includes:
Tire age (DOT date)
Tread depth
Sidewall condition (cracking/dry rot)
Proper inflation under load

Because when a tire lets go on something this big… it’s not just a flat—it’s a chain reaction.

If you’re not sure what to look for, that’s exactly why I offer inspections.

Let’s get you RoadReady before your next trip.

🚨 ROOF MAINTENANCE IS NOT OPTIONAL 🚨

This 46’ horse trailer came to me with a roof that was completely failing.

Cracked sealant, dried-out seams, and multiple potential leak points. Its just a matter of time before serious water damage set in.

👉 And here’s the reality…
Most RV and trailer owners don’t even realize there’s a problem until it’s too late.

Water intrusion doesn’t just stay on the roof—
It leads to:
• Rotten wood
• Mold
• Electrical issues
• Thousands in repairs

🔧 What we did:
✔ Removed failing sealant
✔ Prepped and cleaned all surfaces properly
✔ Resealed all seams, vents, and penetrations
✔ Reinforced vulnerable areas

Now this roof is sealed up right and ready for years of use 💪

Takeaway:
If your RV or trailer has been sitting, or it’s been over a year since your last inspection… you’re rolling the dice.

Let’s make sure your rig is road-ready before your next trip.

🚨 “It was working fine last season…” 🚨

That’s what I hear all the time.

Today’s call was for a leveling system failure…
👉 No response from controls
👉 Error messages
👉 Jacks wouldn’t operate

After inspection, the real issue showed up…

🐭 Rodents.

They had chewed through critical wiring underneath the RV, completely disabling the system.

⚠️ A sitting RV is the perfect home for rodents.
Warm. Covered. Undisturbed.

And they don’t just move in… they destroy:
• Wiring harnesses
• Leveling systems
• Slide-outs
• HVAC systems
• Plumbing

💸 Small problem → BIG repair bill.

🔧 What we did on this repair:
✔ Repaired damaged wiring by splicing in new sections
✔ Used weather-resistant (sealed) connections
✔ Installed new protective wire loom
✔ Secured and rerouted wiring for better protection
✔ Sealed vulnerable entry points in the underbelly
✔ Fully tested leveling system to confirm proper operation

✅ System back up and working properly

🚐 Don’t wait until something stops working.

At D&S Custom Conversions, we can:
✔ Inspect for rodent damage
✔ Identify and seal entry points
✔ Repair and protect critical systems
✔ Get your RV truly RoadReady™
