One thing homeowners are surprised to learn:

A “lifetime roof warranty” does NOT mean everything is covered forever.

A lot of roof warranties only cover manufacturing defects in the shingles themselves. That’s very different from covering installation mistakes, flashing problems, or ventilation issues.

And yes — poor ventilation can actually void some manufacturer warranties.

That’s why I always tell people:
The quality of the installation matters more than the warranty paper.

According to manufacturers like GAF and organizations like the National Roofing Contractors Association, proper ventilation and complete roofing systems are critical to long-term roof performance.

I’ve seen roofs with great warranties fail early because corners were cut during installation.

Before choosing a roofer, ask:

* What exactly does the warranty cover?
* Is workmanship included?
* Is ventilation being addressed?
* Are they installing a complete system or just shingles?

Those details matter a lot more than most people realize.

Your “premium shingles” don’t mean much if the rest of the roof system is cheap.

A lot of roofers advertise high-end shingles, then cut corners everywhere else:

* cheap felt
* low quality ice & water shield
* basic 3-tab ridge caps
* reused flashing
* poor ventilation

The truth is your roof is a SYSTEM. The accessories and installation matter just as much as the shingles themselves.

The National Roofing Contractors Association and manufacturers like GAF both emphasize that proper ventilation and complete roofing systems are critical to roof performance and lifespan.

I’ve seen expensive shingles fail early because the roof couldn’t breathe properly or corners were cut during installation.

One specific example is MANY Alabama roofers use 3-tab shingles for ridge cap. This is a big problem. 3-tab shingles are not designed to be bent over the ridge or hold up as long as the rest of the roof. This is why you'll see good looking roofs with missing ridge caps or ridge caps that look much older than the rest of the roof.

Most homeowners only hear about the shingles because that’s the easy part to market.

Ask about the details:

* What underlayment is being used?
* Are they using actual dedicated ridge cap shingles?
* Is ventilation being addressed?
* Are flashing details being replaced if needed?

That stuff matters, and Protech will shoot you straight. Call us today for a free estimate or roof inspection!

How Long Should a Roof Actually Last in Alabama?

A lot of roofers will tell you a roof needs replacement at 15–17 years old. Personally, I disagree with that in many cases.

In Alabama, a standard “30-year” asphalt shingle roof realistically lasts closer to ~20–25 years on average in my experience—but there are a LOT of variables.

According to the National Roofing Contractors Association and the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association, roof lifespan depends heavily on:
• Ventilation
• Installation quality
• Climate
• Maintenance

Just like your vehicle, your roof needs maintenance too.

Every 3–5 years, I recommend checking:
• Nail pops
• Exposed nails/fasteners
• Pipe boot flashings

Staying ahead of these small issues can add years to a roof’s life.

Proper installation also matters more than most people realize:
• Correct nailing
• Proper flashing details
• Correct valley leak barriers
• Proper attic ventilation

I’ve even seen roofs fail prematurely from poor ventilation and improperly designed spray foam systems.

Bottom line:
Not every 15-year-old roof needs replacement. A properly installed and maintained roof can often last much longer than people think.

Does Your Roof Have Storm Damage—or Just Normal Wear?

After a storm, a lot of homeowners ask the same question:

“Will insurance cover my roof?”

Here’s the truth—not all damage qualifies.

According to the Insurance Information Institute, homeowners insurance typically covers sudden, accidental damage—not wear and tear over time.

What is storm damage?

• Hail impacts (bruising, granule loss in specific areas)
• Wind damage (lifted, creased, or missing shingles)
• Damage that affects your roof’s ability to shed water

What’s not storm damage?

• Even granule loss across the whole roof
• Aging, cracking, or brittle shingles
• General wear from sun and time

Organizations like the National Roofing Contractors Association emphasize that what matters most is functional damage—not just how it looks.

Bottom line:
Just because a roof looks worn doesn’t mean it qualifies for an insurance claim.

The #1 Cause of Small Roof Leaks? It’s Usually This…

If you’ve got a small leak, there’s a good chance it’s not your shingles.

It’s your pipe boot flashing.

What is it?
A pipe boot (or vent flashing) is the material that seals around the plumbing pipes coming through your roof. It’s designed to keep water from entering at one of the most vulnerable points on your roof.

So what’s the problem?
Most pipe boots use a rubber collar—and over time, that rubber:

• Cracks from UV exposure
• Dries out and shrinks
• Pulls away from the pipe

Once that happens, water can get in quickly.

According to the National Roofing Contractors Association, penetrations like vent pipes are one of the most common areas for roof leaks due to long-term material breakdown.

The good news:
This is usually a simple, inexpensive repair—if you catch it early.

The bad news:
Left alone, it can turn into interior damage, mold, and much bigger repairs.

Bottom line:
If your roof is 8–15 years old and hasn’t had maintenance, your pipe boots should be checked.

What Does a “50-Year Roof Warranty” Actually Cover?

Most homeowners hear “lifetime warranty” and assume everything is covered.

That’s not always the case.

Recently my aunt Brooke called me about getting the stains on her roof cleaned. Even though I didn’t install her roof, I knew she had a GAF shingle. I told her to call GAF since the stains are covered under the Stainguard warranty. Two weeks later the full cost of cleaning her roof was covered by GAF. That’s why I use GAF shingles, in a nut shell.

At ProTech Construction & Roofing, we install roofing systems backed by the GAF System Plus Warranty—and it goes beyond the basics.

Here’s what that means for you:

• 50-year material coverage on qualifying shingles
• Coverage for tear-off, disposal, and replacement if there’s a defect
• Non-prorated, meaning 100% of costs are covered for the full 50 years!
• Transferable warranty if you sell your home

According to the National Roofing Contractors Association, both materials and installation quality are critical to a roof’s performance.

That’s why your warranty matters just as much as your shingles.

Bottom line:
Not all “lifetime warranties” are created equal. Make sure you understand what’s actually covered before you sign.

Most homeowners think roofs fail because of storms.
In reality, a lot of roofs fail from what’s happening underneath them.

So what is roof ventilation?
Roof ventilation is a system that allows air to flow through your attic—typically pulling in cooler air through soffit vents and pushing hot, moist air out through ridge or exhaust vents.

Why is it so important?
Without proper ventilation, heat and moisture get trapped in your attic—and that causes problems fast.

Here’s what poor ventilation can lead to:

• Shortened roof lifespan (shingles overheat and deteriorate faster)
• Higher energy bills (your AC is fighting a superheated attic)
• Moisture buildup leading to mold, mildew, and wood rot
• Warped or damaged roof decking over time

According to industry standards like the National Roofing Contractors Association and the International Residential Code, proper attic ventilation is a required part of a healthy roofing system—not an upgrade.

Bottom line:
You can have the best shingles in the world, but if your attic can’t breathe, your roof won’t last like it should.

When it comes time to install a new roof, almost every homeowner asks us the same question:

"What is drip edge?" and "Does it really matter?"

Most homeowners never notice it… but drip edge is one of the most important parts of your roofing system.

So what is it?
Drip edge is a metal flashing installed along the edges of your roof. Its job is simple: control where water goes—directing rain off your roof and into your gutters instead of letting it run behind or under your roofing system.

Why is it so important?
Without proper drip edge, water doesn’t just fall straight off your roof. It can cling, curl, and seep backward under shingles due to surface tension—leading to hidden damage over time. Especially in your fascia and soffit.

Here’s what a properly installed drip edge protects against:

• Rotting fascia, soffit, and roof decking
• Water getting behind gutters
• Mold, mildew, and interior leaks
• Pest intrusion at roof edges
• Premature roof failure

It also helps extend the life of your roof by keeping moisture away from the most vulnerable areas.

Bottom line:
Drip edge is a small detail that makes a big difference. In fact, modern building codes require it on most roofs because of how critical it is to long-term performance.

If your roof doesn’t have it—or it was installed incorrectly—you could be a few heavy rains away from costly damage.
