Some hot summer cooling tips...

YOUR A/C IS PROBABLY NOT BROKEN!!

With temperatures reaching the 90' to 100 this week, here are some things you may not know and some quick tips to help you prepare!

Things You May Not Know:
• A/C units in this region are weighted to handle max temps of about 93 degrees. Your A/C will not keep your home at a crisp 68-70 degrees in 100 degree weather. It WILL fall behind!!
• Setting your thermostat to a lower temperature does not make the unit blow colder air
• In this region, if it is 4pm and it is 98 degrees outside and 78 degrees in your house, your A/C IS WORKING!!
• The most common service call we receive during a heat wave is “I have my A/C set on 70 and it’s 78 degrees in my house”.
• If your A/C unit won’t go below 80, and runs all day…..let it be!!
Quick Tips to Help you Prepare
• PLEASE no DIY A/C hacks this week. Now is not the time to replace your current thermostat with the fancy one you want or to try that new, more dense, filter.
• Change your filters today.
• Put in a simple filter (the pleated ones that come in a pack of 3 for $15-20). The more expensive filters are more dense and reduce airflow, which reduces the capacity of your A/C unit. In these temps the filter is going to make a difference.
• Trim any weeds around your outside A/C unit
• Put your system on Permanent Hold. Do not let it run the normal programs in this heat.
• Do Not set your thermostat Below 70 degrees (unless in the past you have safely done so for a long period of time). Some systems can handle it and some cannot.
• Set the thermostat to a temperature that is comfortable and LEAVE IT.
• If you are sensitive to these high temps, have elderly family members, pets that can’t handle the heat, or any reason you need the temp below 80 or so degrees…FIND A WINDOW UNIT NOW. Make sure it works and make sure it fits the window correctly.
• Close your blinds and/or curtains. You want to keep your windows covered as much as possible.
